Panicking now!!!

Got my 1st show on new pony next Saturday doing combined training. Thought I had better practice my show jumping this morning and put up a double as not jumped a double for ages.

Whilst she jumps the 1st part ok, as soon as she hits the ground it's flat out canter to the 2nd part and she flies it. Any tips on how to get her to slow down in between?

Tried to sit up and back to slow her but she was so fast I was only thinking about sitting up when we were over the second jump!!!!!

Grid work where she has to bounce through to slow down and think about where her feet are and what she is doing.

Alternatively, put a pole between the fences.

I would if it is possible loose school her through bounce grids and gradually increase the distance between the jumps. Let her get it out of her system without you on board and hopefully she will teach herself to take it easy.

I'll second the pole work, this will defo' make her slow up, collect herself, think and pick her feet up.

but be aware that they can try and jump a bounce in one go (very scarey) so hold on tight!!

with doubles i wouldnt give as much with my hands over the 1st jump either (sit up more rather than jumping position over 1st) so i was ready for her landing and running into the next. i would also try working her with two fences say 4 strides between (gives you abit more time in between to slow her down) and make her almost half halt in canter or try to get her to do them in trot, gradually bringing them in closer until she works well on 3 strides then 2 then 1. it does take time but well worth it. my mare used to jump so big in to doubles that she didnt leave enough room to get out resulting in her stopping (or trying to jump them as a bounce) we worked her like this and it helped her alot. good luck
