My horse jumps fairly well at home not refusing etc but when i go out its a disater most of the time!! I dont have proper showjumps at home i just have cones, barrels, chairs, tyers and a couple of sj (one of them home made) i try to make the jumps look scary etc and i have put tarpulan underneath but he just doesnt care and jumps them straight away. whereas whe i take him out he finds the coloured jumps scary and refusing and runs out! But one of the places where i often go to do local events etc he has jumped all the jumps before in lessons but when i come to do a course or clear round he refuses them again :/ Once he has popped over them a few times he is normally fine, but in a competion i cant just go in and go and jump the course a few times before i want to start the comp ! Any ideas on how to get him jumping better out side of home? As i would like to go to some sj comps but dont want to be humiliated!!!!

i would go to shows and talk to organisers and ask if you pay for the class, if you could go in and not compete but just to take your time and get him over all of them.

when i take youngsters to their first few shows, i dont normally compete but enter classes with the intention of spending time getting it right and doing bit circles before or around to get the relaxed a bit more.

Whats wrong with being shown up a few times? if its the only way your horse is going to learn then just role with it, he'll soon get used to if you do it every week.

Can't you take him in some clear rounds just to get his confidence up before you go in for the chosen class?

Everywhere you go there is green horse, youngsters learning to cope with jumping at a competition, so don't worry too much about it, relax, take your time, one day he'll just do it and you''ll have good days and bad days, but he'll get there.

How experienced a jumper are you? often the horse will pick up on rider nerves that something is 'different' and act up when the rider gets tense. The only way to get over it is to go out and play - who care if he knocks them down / refuses - everyone started somewhere. Go somewhere that does a clear round class, and pay to enter 3 times (in a row) and go in and school round the course as you would at home.

Maybe it is because he is too excited to concentrate, make sure you have him in a nice outline, working well and relaxed before you enter the ring. When you enter the ring, use the time before the bell well, do circles, make sure your horse is bending well. And most important of all, take it steady. Bob, the horse who I share with my brother is quite nervous of some fences, but as long as I remain confident and steady into the fence, he will jump it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWVNU405CMw you can see in this video that I like to take things steady - I was jumping non competitively so I could make sure he was doing things right - rather than rushing and making mistakes. The only thing I did wrong in that video was almost fall off

how old is the horse? it just sounds like you need to build his ring confidence up and the only way to do that is to keep going to shows and getting him in the ring. keep everything small and easy and make sure you take your time in the ring, give him plenty of time to have a look round calmly before you start the round. does anything change at competitions ie do you ride differently, do you change any of his tack?
