Hellooo,

I loan a 14.3hh 5 year old gelding. (6 in June)
I pretty much ride every day and he has one or two days off a week. I hack and school alternate days and try to jump/do pole work once every two weeks.

He's doing really well with everything atm and I've been keeping the jumps really small to get his confidence up. Last week I decided to notch them up a bit and we sailed over a 2ft upright in the end. Both loving it
Just wondering how high is it safe to go with him just now? Baring in mind his age and height. Thank you:)

How long is a piece of string? My 14,2 rising 6 highland is schooling up to 1m10 at home. It depends on his conformation, technique, confidence, ability, and your ability too.

Agree with jftd. I raise jumps only when I know they're 100% happy with them at a smaller height, & even then quite slowly so their confidence isn't risked.

Ah littlelegs, I totally agree about small incremental changes... So why did I buy a load of polyjump things which raise in 25cm stages?

eta - I don't have a sig when I post from my phone?

25cm isn't a massive increase for a single jump, I meant it more in the sense not going from a 2' upright to a 3' course.
I'm too lazy to even make a Sig, & i'm usually on my phone anyway!

As everyone has said before, take it slowly. The 14"2 4yo that I'm working atm has just started jumping courses of around 80/85cms. We do a fair bit of gridwork and save courses for when competing (he isn't spooky at all so it's just working on technique as opposed to confidence round courses) Usually we'll put the end of a grid up a little so we're jumping slightly bigger than we would at a competition. It's all just playing it by ear. If he feels confident and happy then put them up a bit, but don't be afraid to put them back down. He managed to fall over a fence a little while ago so we just put them all right back down and built it up again.
And with regard to how high can he go, you might be suprised. I used to compete my 14"3 cart pony at 1m20 and put a hounds in front of him and he'd jump anything! Have fun :)

My daughters 14.2hh has also just turned 6 and schools over 80/85 and jumps odd Metre jumps also. We started at 30 and increased by 5/10 until happy before upping the height again. Too high too quickly can knock their confidence :(
