Had the best lesson last night.
grin.gif
It was with David Gatherer, who I did a few XC sessions with but only one SJ lesson ages ago. Will definitely be raiding the sofa cushions and trying to get another lesson fitted in before my first BE.

now_loves_mares very kindly offered to come along for company/blethering/videoing so a big thank you to her too!

Exercises for the evening were really suited to what we need to work on. First was two sets of canter poles- on one side they were set at 12ft (regular distance) and on the other 10ft. The idea was to canter through them both and adjust gradually on the two sides without poles. As per usual, I rode this much better on my stronger left rein!

I thought we might have a problem with the 12ft poles as Hopalong has a short stride, but she did it really nicely almost from the off. In fact, by the time we were doing it on the other rein (right, therefore my weaker one), she was struggling with the short distance poles and making the normal ones fine when I'd thought it would be the other way around!
blush.gif

We then moved on to going up a grid which was built up one fence at a time from poles on the ground to:

X-X-X----|----||----|

(this translates to three crosspoles on bounce distances and then upright-spread-upright on one stride each!)

Then down the other long side we had two spreads on a 5 stride distance. This was us near the start of the exercise, getting quite a nice 5 strides;

As we did it (each time the grid increasing by one fence!), we actually started finding the 5 strides short! Would never had thought that would be the case, and David was happy to point out that the range is there, I just need to remember to activate and use it!
wink.gif

So, although he'd originally said we would stick to concentrating on forwards all night, he decided we should attempt it on the 6 strides that another horse had been doing. Below is our attempt. Didn't quite get a nice, even 6 strides and worried that she might just fancy going on a long 5th one anyway, but did get the 6!
smile.gif

And then to finish up, we stuck the fences up a couple of holes and went again on 5. Actually felt like the nicest we'd done it all night.
smile.gif

So very pleased with my pingy pony last night. David was being very complimentary about her so he's earned a repeat customer for sure!
wink.gif
He asked if I had her on anything special as she was older (18, will be 19 this year) and when I said Cortaflex, he said that was what he used and said she looks fab as she is, don't worry about changing anything.
smile.gif

So still need to work on keeping my hands still, also my lower leg looks a bit manic on the videos, maybe my stirrups need to go up a hole?
confused.gif
Also need to work on getting and keeping a nice, constant rythymn around corners as that is what gets us to the fences on a nice stride- not panicking a stride or two out and taking a pull and then kicking!
smirk.gif

Hopalong was very pleased at the end of the lesson to finally be able to mug now_loves_mares for the treats she'd smelled in her pocket from the outset and was also happy to get home for dinner looking very pleased with herself.

Sounds fantastic - I can't watch the vid just now.

I had a JumpX training with DG last year - I went from being a nervous wreck strugging with 1'6 cross poles at the start to confidently jumping about 2'9 - he is such an amazing instructor!

Well done both of you!

What a very pingy pony, looked like you had great fun
smile.gif
, always nice when you find an instructor that is complimentary to your horse,
grin.gif

Yay
smile.gif
Glad it was good, he really is a fab instructor. I've known him for about 15 years now and he's always helped me get the most out of my horses. Down side is I get my official Sunday title when I get it wrong
crazy.gif
almost makes me feel like a kid again!
I've got a lesson with him in 3 weeks and really looking forward to it now
smile.gif
If he has his way J will be going Nov this year. I did say he was welcome to take him round....
grin.gif

If I'd known that there would be bribery in the form of chocolate I'd have been there a long time ago
wink.gif

Glad the videos were useful (and finally started uploading!) I have another couple I think so will try to get those on tonight. She was much smoother on the bigger canter, and agree the last one was the best of the night, albeit the rest were pretty good too!

'twas fun!
grin.gif

Thanks all, best not tell David he has such a huge fan club though or his ego/prices might inflate?!
wink.gif
He is really good for building your confidence though, but also knows when to rein you in when you get carried away!
tongue.gif

Saz- he was trying to tell me that we could do Nov!!!
blush.gif
I said XC wouldn't terrify me as much as the SJ and I was planning to use Hopalong's age as an excuse to stopping at PN (if we get there!).
wink.gif
Come to think of it... don't fancy the stressage much either?!
tongue.gif

n_l_m: you definitely earned the choccies, always nice having company, especially when Mr FigJam is rude enough to be away on business!
mad.gif
tongue.gif
In fact, he's also rude enough to be taking advantage of me being off work and has called requesting to meet for lunch... and take his camera kit that he forgot as he is shooting a gig later!
smirk.gif
Still, I get lunch at least!
wink.gif

I dont see why you couldn't tbh
smile.gif
I'll do it if you will! I said if we got our 4 clears PN this year Id consider it. My ultimate aim with him is to 1* so I cant really say no to Nov
crazy.gif
. Although Im still going on the 'maybe next year' theory
grin.gif

Hmmm... she's 18, will be 19 this year, I'd hate to push her too far and break her or knock her confidence. Also, I don't feel I'm a good enough rider to do Nov.
crazy.gif
I would love to one day do Novice and 1* is the ultimate aim, but just feel Hopalong and I will run out of time to do that.
frown.gif
And I've only ever done 2 BE Intros in my entire life! We'll see, if we can get to and complete a few PN happily then maybe I'll re-evaluate, but 1.15m SJ is sounding scary right now!
blush.gif

True, keep forgetting she's a bit older. Well its meant to be fun so no point pushing too far out the comfort zone and not enjoying it
smile.gif

Saz- I truly wish I could freeze her so she doesn't age anymore! Or get a clone 10 years younger!
wink.gif
I do want to feel like we've achieved something but without putting either of us outside of our "capability zone" rather than "comfort zone" if that makes sense?

Thanks tricksibell, how's your pre-season stuff going? Managed to get out and about or snowed in?

Looking good! Want a blow by blow account tomorrow

Was that not enough?!
wink.gif
Here was me thinking the above would bore everyone to tears already!
tongue.gif
Just called Gleneagles and all going ahead tomorrow.
grin.gif

tricksibell- poor you, this weather really does suck. Hope you can get out jumping.

Good stuff! That is why you are the brains and I am...emm... I'm the one who follows the one with brains!

She looks lovely in the vids - I cannot believe she's almost 19!

If you don't mind me asking, is this a clinic organised through someone else or a group you organised yourself?

Southside of Glasgow so I am fairly local. I've been over to SNEC before so I know thats about an hour/hour 1/2 depending on traffic. I've never been to Kingsbarn so not sure how far it is.

Just keeping my eye open as the more things I can get Baby out to the better. Plus watching those videos he sounds quite good for nervous riders, which is how I'd describe myself.

Of course all this is dependant on if this snow ever melts and I ever get the chance to sit on him again!

Is Braeface Stud anywhere near you? I notice on S.E.A website he does clinics there regularly. He also does some lessons in jumpcross/XC at Greenfields.

I havn't heard of it to be honest. I know about the jumpx ones as my sister attend. I'll keep an eye out at the local centres - perhaps I shall get lucky!

You should definately get a lesson if you can - the jumpx clinic I had with him was honesty the making of my wee horse!

According to the listing on S.E.A, it's address is;

Old Muirhead Road Uplawmoor G78 3BY.

There's David clinics this Sat (6th) and Tues 23rd March. ( Braeface website )

Wow! That's only about 20 minutes away from me. Thank you so much for letting me know about that FigJam. I can't make the March clinics unfortunatly but I'll keep an eye out for more.

Thank you again!
