After I had done this the yard owner was saying that my boy looks like he is struggling to jump and that he is in pain, I know its hard from the photos but I think he looks great (he has had surgery on his stifles but jumping is his love!!! Any opinions please (sorry about the crap riding)

Shortening your stirrups will really help you, I think.

Then you need to be really careful that you dont lean on your elbows- think of pushing your hands forwards over every fence because in these pics your horse doesnt always have sufficient freedom through the neck to make a better shape.

He's a lovely horse, you must be proud!!

Your horse looks really honest

You need to shorten your stirrups and fold in your middle rather than standing up and forwards. Think of sticking your bum out behind you

Be softer with your hands too, push forards rather than up.

You need to fold and get your hands further forward - unfortunately you are catching him quite badly over the jump (look at his mouth in the top picture!)

As above if you shorten your stirrups it should help, but you do need to do something radical about the reins, as you keep doing that he could soon decide that jumping isn't very nice.

Agree with the above about shortening stirrups

But reckon your boy looks like he's enjoying himself, if he was in pain jumping he wouldn't do it!!

Believe me I know as this has happened to me this year with my chap, he has always loved jumping, the bigger the better and started stopping at small x-poles he has been treated for a twisted pelvis and I will hopefully start jumping again once he's seen the back bloke on Thurs!!

If not it may be that the OCD in his stifles (Successfully operated on) or the fractured pedal bone that he suffered when he was younger might be affecting him now he's getting a bit older (13 this year)... if so he will become a dressage horse!!

Ive got a lesson this eve, usually im really good at giving with my hands, its just there is so much to think about, not looking at the fence, keeping my legs on, steering and landing and staying straight, sometimes seeing the pics is a shock and I hate the idea of pulling him in the mouth as he is such a lovely boy I dont want to hurt him!!!

Shorten stirrups and work on the flat in ur jump position - stick your arse out!

Stop panicking - your face is some of the pics is a picture!! Dont twist your weight - work on some single fences or grids, so you dont look to other jumps around the arena. Keep looking forward and pick a spot in front of you [like the yard or a barn or something or a tree] and look at it. KEEP looking at it!

Lovely horse, and good luck!

I aint Mr Witaker but your horse has his ears forward in every picture ... he looks like hes happy enough obviously if he s in pain there may be slightly different story just before or after jump but if he comes in to fence ok and goes away ok then crack on and remember why you have your horse HAVE FUN!!

Try outting some V poles on some jumps to make him make a better shape in front, it will help him and he will look less dangly.

just shorten your stirrups and try to fold in at your wait. when you do this try to push your weight down to secure you lower leg, and push your hand forward to allow him to streach over the fence good luck he is a FAB horse!

Echo everyone else shorted your stirrups and you should find that helps alot
Also i was told this and it really helps me: Imagine you are sat in the most comfortable chair in the house/at work/at uni wherever and you're favourite thing is on the table infront of you (chocolate, vodka whatever). Thing is, your other half/brother/friend wants the seat and the chocolate, so you need to lean forward to get the chocolate without your bum leaving the chair.
Chair = saddle
Chocolate = between horses ears.

Worked for me!

Stop panicking and try to think about being straighter in the saddle, shorter stirrups should help a lot. He's enjoying himself - you've just got to now as well
