I am in need of some new jumping poles, I don't want anything spectacular but some decent wooden poles would suffice. I did contemplate getting drainpipes but I know they will get smashed up in no time when they're left in the field with sheep, but how much do wooden poles cost rougly?

Thank you!

ah ha! finally i something i can answer with some authority. i have just made a complete set of 10 show jumps with fillers etc.

if you pop to your local lumber yard (our local tack shop does wood too) purchase some 3" wide poles. The ones we get are 12' long. Depending on how wide you want them, (we have a narrow menage so we have 8' poles but i think the average is 10'), get a saw and cut them to size. either paint them with wood primer then gloss or put wood stain on to protect them.

I also bought some 4" ones but they are just too wide and heavy, i wouldn't recommend getting them. the 3" wide x 12' long poles cost us £4.67 each, but we also had the added advantage that you have an off-cut of 4' you can then use to build fillers with.

having just seen plastic poles go for £10-15 i think it is madness to buy them. plus with wood you have the added advantage you can paint them to whatever colour you want! They last for years. Happy painting.

we got rustic poles for £6 each from a builders yard (or whatever you call them, wood place!) and then painted them

about £3 for 8ft rough sawn ones or about £6 for 12ft nicely finished ones
