Hey all,
I am just coming back into riding after 20 years. I am doing some jumping at the moment and my RI told me that I shouldn’t fold forward when I jump. That is the old way of riding? What is the jumping position now? I can’t stop myself folding forwards 😂

She said shoulders back, think of pushing tummy into the jump on approach and push heels forward? Granted they are only small jumps.
Never heard of that 😂 even if they were small id still assume a sort of position certainly not leaning back or feet forward lol

Maybe she was meant as the jumps are small you dont need to go fully into jumping position? I do often see people being a bit dramatic with their positions over small fences when its unnecessary 😅
Perhaps. I do need a more secure seat as I do think if she stopped I would go out the front door. Maybe she is getting me to ride evasively just in case?

Fold downwards, not so much forwards. Bum often has to feel like it's going back a little bit - if you're in a saddle where the placement of stirrup bar means you're a long way behind your feet then you can end up throwing yourself forwards too much. A lot depends on the saddle and stirrup bar placement and how well it suits you. The rider in the bottom photo before might find her leg is a little far back for good balance over a fence, but that's rare in a jump saddle, and not seen that often in a GP.

New one on me, you would get behind the movement, what do they want you to do sit bolt upright???

Perhaps as they are small jumps you are overfolding.
When small you really can think shoulders up more than forwards and just marginally raise your bum off the saddle
It sounds like you might be collapsing at the waist and your instructor is saying about your tummy to get you to engage your core a bit.

Easiest thing is to ask her for clarity next time.

I came back into riding after a long break too. I’m one for doing the superman over a fence (& all the ones I jump are small 😂) but nowadays people seem to do more of a bum-pop kind of movement. It looks like you need a core for that though and a lower back with some mobility so not sure if I’ll ever achieve it.

My horse has a very round, exuberant jump, and the best way to sit on it is to simply have a light seat and soft hands, then allow the horse to come up to meet me...the horse's movement causes the fold. I don't actively fold downwards or forwards.

Not sure if that makes sense, but perhaps that's what your instructor means?

But to be honest I think you look fine over a jump!

My question is, are those pictures take before she has asked you to change what you do or after? If these where taken before she asked you to not over fold then what she has suggested has worked as these picture look ok. if they are taken before any suggested adjustment then I would be confused.
