Hiya,
I have a 16.3 6 year old mare called Nelly. I have been eventing her but at our first BE event a couple of weeks ago we had 3 stops in XC whereas she is usually very keen to do XC and never stops. I took her back to do the unaffiliated ode there at the weekend and she had 3 stops showjumping, whereas she has never stopped showjumping, and 3 stops XC so I decided to retire her. In the showjumping she was so backwards thinking and felt like she had lost all of her confidence and in the XC she was really nervous. I hate to see her like this and I don't know what I have done wrong, my jumping position isn't great which I am working on, but are there any techniques I can work on to help build her confidence? I am getting her back checked this weekend and getting her saddle refitted, I have had her teeth done. Many thanks!

When a horse suddenly stops doing something it's previously been happy doing with same rider, it's most probably pain related. If physio. doesn't find anything obvious, I would consult vet. Hope you get it sorted.

I'd say probably pain related. Once that is taken out id take her back to basics of small jumps/ cross bars to see if its a confidence issue with her or you are sending odd signals out. I'd also just get an instructor to see where it's all going wrong :)

Rule out pain and also get her teeth and saddle checked (one of mine went weird due to his saddle), otherwise perhaps just drop down a level and see how the horse goes? She might have got a scare? Was the ground slippy (where you wearing studs) etc.? As it was your first BE, was it bigger / more technical than you normally do?
