I enrolled my eldest into a RS as he'd lost confidence, and he's doing well. Inbetween he rides his sister's pony, but just messes about practicing what he's done in lessons. I give him no 'instruction', just tell him if he;s doing something dangerous.
The pony we have is somewhat set in his ways. He's fabulous with the kids, can easily be ridden off LR.

Today we decided as eldest is going to a show in the morning that we'd do some trotting poles, so he could enter the 'clear round'. My idea was if he could trot round some poles on the ground in the class, he'd gain confidence.

Only ponio had other ideas. He FLEW them!!

He jumped about 3ft, and made it clear he would not trot over poles, they had to be jumped. Son flew about 2ft above the saddle and did a cartwheel out of the side door. He was unhurt, but shaken. I lunged ponio over the poles a few times and he carried on jumping them...

So... I need to learn how to teach ponio NOT to jump trotting poles! Obviously, we won't be attemping the 'poles on the ground clear round' tomorrow (unless the lovely ladies who are organising it will allow us to walk round LOL) but I'd like this pony to be able to trot over poles...

The problem is, he's 10hh.... and I can't get on him myself, so it all needs to be done in-hand, or on the lunge...

Any ideas would be vey welcome

Constant repitition is the only answer! Lead the pony in walk in a bridle over a pole several time and then in trot, it will be less inclined to jump if being led and with a bridle on you will have more control. Once he is happily trotting over poles in hand try again on the lunge, if he jumps again, put someone leading him on the outside until he stops and then try again without a leader. I had this same problem with an 11h welsh A and it took a good few sessions until we had it cracked, She does revert every now again but a quick session in hand normally sorts the problem again for a good few months.

is this over one pole or several? if only one try putting more down so has something more to look at and think about. just walk over them first and with no jockey just in case..... as last post repetition is good, make him bored of doing it so he doesn't get so keen. good luck.

He's doing this when led inhand with or without a jockey...

will try putting a series of poles down and seeing how he deals with that.

Thanks guys

You could also try leading him up to it and making him halt in front of it and then leading him over it and then halting again to try get that bit extra control in. Repetition is definitely the key though - he needs to find it boring. You could try positioning the poles towards the fence/wall/into a corner to see if that backs him off a bit too???
