What would you consider a short distance in a one stride doulble? Would you bounce it on a long striding horse? How much of an effect does the ground have?

A standard 1 stride double at a show would be 24ft apart (just over 7m) and 8 of my human strides. At home I sometimes set up a short distance to get my horse to use herself more - I would set this up on 7 of my strides - I would regard this as short but it would depend also on how high I was jumping and I might move the distance out as I put the fences up/wider. Although my horse is small she has a long stride but always manages to put 1 stride in (although sometimes its a shuffle if she's really tanking

A bounce fence would be set on half the distance of a 1 stride double - 10-12 ft and 4 of my human strides - so quite a lot shorter.
I'm sure the ground and the gradient do have some effect too but its more to do with the quality of the canter and trying to get them engaged behind into that lovely bouncy rhythm to get them to jump correctly through it.
If I was having problems with my horse bouncing through a correctly strided double I would put a single pole on the floor halfway between the 2 elements to make sure he/she took the correct stride in the middle.
Hope that helps.
