My 16.2hh Irish Sports Horse has just qualified for Hickstead next year, and I would like to purchase a new saddle for her! We have a Wintec GP one at the moment but I would like to get her a jumping saddle. Money isn't an issue as I want a top brand of saddle that will last her a long time and look smart whilst in use! I have looked at the Devoucoux but they have bad reviews about fitting horses etc. Anyone had any problems with this? Also the Butet saddles look good. Anyone had an experience with these. Thanks :)

Congratulations!

I had a Butet mono XC made for me, Annika did the measurements herself, and it was wonderful. Took a bit of getting used to after a GP, in fact at first it felt like an ejector seat, but after a month or so I would not have swapped for the world. It was grippy calfskin. It was beautifully balanced, but no "blocks" as with some saddles.

My next horse also loved it, but my current horse did not. I thought maybe it was a bit narrow for him, and loved it so much I would have had another made for him. This time I had another "fitter" who was charming, obviously an experienced horseman, and he took the measurements and left me his saddle in the same style/size to use until it was done. Sadly this loan saddle made my horse very sore when I used it for a jump lesson the next day, and needed a week off work for the swelling to go down. I did not find the company helpful to have the issue looked at before my new saddle was made, and I ended up cancelling the order.

If I were buying another I would ask that Annika fitted it herself, as I have also heard of someone else not satisfied with the fit when another "fitter" has fitted it. I am not sure what training the fitters have, but I got the impression they were not saddlers as such.

Sadly Annika does not cover our area, or I would have a Butet now.

I called Devoucoux, but their agent asked some questions re my horse's conformation, and told me that they are for narrower horses than mine.

I've just ordered a Utopia gp saddle which is lovely, they do make a jump saddle as well so it'd be worth looking at as they're really reasonably priced. They're a new company
