Hay all :)

My mare as most of you know is very very strong to a fence and is currently ridden in a NS universal trans angle gag with leather curb

But I've read that some horse fight a stronger bit so was going to try her in a trans angle loose ring snaffle

Do people think this is a good or bad idea?? The fences won't be big and will be trotting poles aswell

There is no substitute for trying . Just take precautions safety wise. We can all sit on the fence here on HHO and spin you a complete load of B++++++s . Horses do not come with an instruction manual ,and the best horsemen (of either sex) just try stuff out and think. Then think and try stuff out.

I can't advise you one way or the other but I did find that with my mare who could be strong to a fence that she was better in a milder bit. I did do a lot of flatwork too to improve that as well as the jumping.

I sometimes really wish that there was a like button :)

Yes I will the fences will be under 2 foot high and be small enough she can trot over them and my friend by with me at my yard. I wouldn't try anything to risk her :)

I am having regular flat lessons and now starting regular jump lessons. It's taken me since last April to get her to work correctly in work and trot (canter is still be worked on) as she has been seriously ruined by the previous owner who over bitted her and would tell her off for hitting fences so when I had her if she hit a fence she would bolt off in panic!

We do have a fab bond and I had her because I was her last chance!

I don't know if to try the reins on the top ring with the leather curb or will this stop the action of the curb??

If the reins are on the 'snaffle' ring, because they are not fixed the curb strap won't come into action at all.

there is sort of, the star thingy at the bottom next to the report button.

OP just warn other people riding at the same time as you that your horse might go a bit crazy, in case they prefer not to share the arena with you that day and go hacking instead.

I would certainly give it a shot! My old horse used to be very strong to a fence and basically uncontrollable, but after I switched him into a loose ring lozenge snaffle he softened up - it took a couple of months of very scary jumping sessions (!) but these days he's as good as gold. Horses instinctively lean into pressure to avoid being seriously injured in an attack in the wild, so it makes sense that the stronger the bit in their mouth, the more they are likely to push against it.

Thank you :) I know il prob need the gag for XC but would like a snaffle for SJ :) just don't like to have to fight before fences where as XC she is very strong but she keeps a rhythm as less checking as with SJ
