Thankies everyone, I think I will persevere coz he is really chilled in it. I have tried so many bits and he "snatches" all the time when I take a contact. Will need to practice though as at the moment can't string two jumps together if there is a sharp turn!

one of 2 things ... or both..

you have one rein slightly shorter than the other..or you have your weight slightly to the left....

I have to say, I am seriously thinking about a hackamore - the pony is very heavy in the hand if you ask for a contact and I have tried everything...so...today I figured 'what the hell' and hopped on in just a headcollar....well, asked for a contact and she took it beautifully and felt lovely. Only problem was, I couldn't turn at all! (I am sure a hackamore is slightly better than a headcollar though!) May have to start riding in just that tee hee!

Lovely horse. I think the second photo illustrates why the horse wants to turn left.... Work on creating a TOTALLY independant seat as this is the only way a hackamore works correctly. I rode my main horse Cercano in a hackamore at all times and I never ever had a turning problem as he went completely from my seat. Keep working at it and it will come, but don't be tempted to try and turn from rein aids only.

Thank you so much. Actually I wanted to turn left but he didn't! Sorry, re-read my post and I didn't put it very well. I do need to try and work with my seat more.

Sorry, I read it wrongly too

More weight down the inside leg, the pic illustrates no weight down at all, so concentrate on that. A really useful exercise is putting cones out and practising going in and out (a la gymkhana games) using only your weight aids.
