Jumping when out hacking...

Mum and I went for a walk yesterday around the tracks and forests where I normally ride. Up through the woods there is a narrow passageway leading up a hill, with a series of 6 little log piles that people have obviously used as a jumping lane. It looked like someone had recently trashed them though, as the logs were scattered everywhere, so Mum and I took half an hour to put them all back together again - they look quite impressive!

Anyway, it just made me wonder - how many people do actually like to pop the odd fence out hacking? I have never done it, normally because I am on my own most of the time and would be worried about coming off and letting Elz go. And the other thing is that there are not normally many things around that are suitable for jumping! But I have to say, our log piles do look rather inviting...

So, does anyone here have a 'jumping lane' or a few logs where you hack out?

We have some woods on one hacking route that sometimes have fallen trees that make fab jumps! We found a wicked tree that had fallen across the path- had no option but to jump it and the horses loved it, until someone chopped it up into little bits

A lot of our hacking is around a XC course so we have plenty of choice to pop a jump or not

lol!

Yeah I used to all the time with my old mare as she'd do anything and was crap at doing gates as she was a fidget arse so just always took the hunt fence next the gate option! Or the gate itself a couple of times. LOL.
I'd do it with my guy too now as well, been on the look out for hunt fences out hacking lol but still pop over logs and ditches etc if I'm lucky enough to find some

Used to be Pitford Resi and there was logs down everywhere we used to jump and the ditches from water running off from the resi were great to jump!

Prefer not jumping on my own for the same reason (coming off, losing horse etc) but quite happily will with others!

I used to have no problewms popping over logs or the odd small hedge with my little mare out hacking. I'd be a bit more cautious however if I was on someone elses horse. Mind you saying that my only serious fall was out hacking someone elses horse from walk so to be honest it could happen whether you jump or not

Do you mean Pitsford Reservoir in Northants? Is it true that you need a permit to ride around there?

Yeah that's the one!

Hmmm apparantly you're meant to....I'm not sure though as everyone from college always went around it fine and we never had a permit and was never told off or anything :s

Though would advise if fishermen are there not to go for a swim or gallop in there around them!!! lol

There are often little jumps made out of fallen branches etc by other riders, where my daughter and I ride, they are out in the open, so not blocking any paths etc, but sadly some of the dog walkers take great pleasure in knocking them down!

My daughter loves jumping logs, fallen branches ditches etc, once we have checked take off and landing, its great practice.

Sadly there is not much around where we are but then my girl is not supposed to jump anymore with her bad back. However, there are some steps I canter up occasionally it is quite fun

I hack round a country park and I'm a big fan of jumping picnic tables! I jump every one I see! Although now I am older and wiser, I would be careful about the ground conditions if jumping anything larger than a small log seeing as I don't have studs in.

Yes!! we have put up a course of about 12 jumps in our local forest, using branches and fallen trees. Luckily dog walkers don't bother with that area, otherwise they would have been taken down by now.

We jump eveything we come across that is jumpable. One of our current jumps out hacking is a yellow grit salt bin with a huge pile of gorse behind it, the ponies fly it!

We have a wood on a hack near us we used to call the 'jumping wood' as people always used to make jumps out of piles of logs/fallen trees etc. It was great fun making 'courses' when we were kids. Don't go there so often now and it's generally just a pile of twigs. Still good to ask young horses we get to tackle them - see how they take to it.

I have to admit there are certain entrances to farmers fields near us that they block with tree logs to stop joyriders driving cars in and burning them (yes lovely people!) and we have. on occasion popped over them and back - providing no crops and the take off and landing are ok.

I have also been guilty of jumping a hedge between two fields in the past when i couldn't be bothered opening the gate! hehe

I WISH.

There are a few branches to one side of one of the bridle paths and last year there was a quite a decent branch / tyre jump near some haylidge bales, but there is nothing like that around here.

We would also have the problem of people taking improvised jumps to bits, " oh, we're in the country side, can't have people enjoying themselves can we Mildred?"
