Hello!

I'm about to purchase a new horse, who has always jumped in a breastplate!

My current two jumpers both jump in running martingales, and any horse I have had in the last ten years have also always been running martingales (if they had a martingale!)

However, the new horse has a breatplate on at the minute, and to be honest, I don't really want to change that until I get used to him! Would anyone be able to explain to the the difference in a breastplate & martingale, and how the standing element of it compares to the running element of my usual martingale?

Thank you! :)

Jumping in a breastplate without a martingale attachment is the same as jumping with no martingale, the breastplate is just there to keep the saddle from slipping backwards. If the breastplate does have the martingale attachment, it will act the same as a normal martingale.

Ahh okay! But it would be a standing martingale rather than a running one? Or am I wrong on that? :)

No you can have either a running on a standing attachment to the breastplate.

Oh brilliant!

In regards to jumping in a standing martingale though (which he is currently jumping in) would you have any advice? I always thought you wern't meant to jump in a standing as it reduces movement to stretch the neck?

I'm guessing his current breastplate has a running martingale attachment??

if so, I'd just ride him in a running martingale unless you are concerned that his saddle will slip.

the difference between a running martingale and breastplate with running attachment is just two little straps that fasten the martingale to the d rings of the saddle.

unless its a fancy breastplate but I wouldn't worry and just ride in a normal martingale.

Congrats on the new purchase. :D

Edited to add: sorry I just read that he is in a standing. I'm guessing he's in it due to tossing his head about?? you can just use your running martingale and then put the rings through the noseband to create a standing. however i'd just ride him without until you are used to him, horses go differently for each rider and he might not need it with you.

Once you get him, have some lessons and your instructor can advise. x

Thank you :D

Yeah he's in a standing, but is really sweet, not sure why he is in it to be honest! Will bring him for some lessons and see what my coach says! Thanks :)

You are allowed to jump BS in a Standing, but not BE/RC/PC or FEI classes. Properly fitted a standing does nothing until needed.

My last horse was in a standing, you could ride her in a running and she was jumped FEI in one, she was just a lot more pleasant in a standing.

I didn't realise that's how they worked! That makes a lot more sense!

Think I might just put him into a running for my own sanity! Thank you! :)
