i was riding a youngster and for a while after (attempting) to jump 2ft, everyone was convinced he couldnt jump. but eventually we just gave up and put it to 3ft to see his reaction and he just flew! turns out to be one of the best jumping horses i know! i also had a pony that whenever the fences where under 3 ft, she would be like 'owhh this is boring' and drag her feet over haha.
My old horse was awful over little jumps, so much so that we never jumped BN, only disc/newc. The bigger jumps encouraged him to sit back and bascule, whereas he would just flatten and knock little jumps.
I think that a lot of the time they can't see them, especially if the horse is big. Are your poles painted? Current lad struggles to see the brown poles, so we use the freshly painted bright white ones against the dark rubber school, which he finds much easier.
my neddy is a youngster too so i am trying not to rush him and i also thinking he cant jump he is so clumsy over trotting poles and small jumps but cos he is young didnt want to put up too high may be i should
Gridwork (but light gridwork) and loose schoolin ghelps them find their technique. Have you loose jumped him? My horse is only 4, and he has done lots of loose jumping so he can find his stride and develop teachnique without worrying about extra weight and balance of rider on top.
yes trip of poles yet pick up over bigger fences. I think they know the poles are not worth anything. If there's anyway to make poles/small jumps look more solid then you'll probably find they'll pick up a a bit more. Last night I raise the trotting poles so "just knocking it" had more dire consequences than he bargained for - he thought carefully next time he came over and lifted his feet up!
