Depends on your riding school (I'm assuming that is where you are learning to ride). There are LOTS of ways to teach jumping and, to a large degree, it is better to take advice from those that know both rider and horse.

Have fun!

If you mean as a rider, I would say to be able to trot and canter in balance with a good seat and to have a decent jumping position with a secure lower leg - and some confidence in the horse you first jump on!
That's what I would have liked for my first jump :) as it was it was a bit all over the place!! (been riding 12 years now)

Does anybody know what preperation work you need to do in order to jump?
In fact how long before ya can jump?

You need to be proficient at flatwork before jumping. When jumping a course you spend 95% of your time on the floor & only 5% in the air. Riders in general do not put sufficient value on flatwork, they want a 'jumping lesson' & don't seem to realise its importance.
