Jumps for 40 x 20 arena

We're thinking about getting a set of jumps for our arena and interested in any advice. We have some odds and sods plastic jumps but these are really expensive so we were looking at a wooden set to add to them. Seen some at very reasonable prices.

We have a young horse that's just learning jumping, my wifes dressage horse that is ex show jumper (v.scary), and a dead reliable cob that loves jumping and is teaching me the ropes.

Firstly I think we should be getting training stands rather than wings so we can save on space. Would it also be worth cutting some poles down to 8 feet or wouldn't this make much difference?

My wife really wanted a Jacobs ladder jump so that is non negotiable. But what else would be good ? Thinking of a plank jump and some scary fillers. A couple of matching vertical poles that could be used as a double.

Any ideas on a source of good layouts for a small arena ? I saw one thread where the jumps were cris cross down centre and he reckoned he could get 5 singles and a triple in.
 
Our arena is about 18x35 and it is tight fitting lots of jumps in. I know you said you don't want plastic, but a couple of wings like this are really handy. You can use 1 wing for 2 fences at an angle, which really saves room.

They need to be the ones that the cups slide on and can therefore point in any direction.

Planks are great and a good selection of fillers (preferably reversible).
 
We have a 40 x 20 arena and use it a lot for jump schooling. We have been lucky enough to get some plastic jumps second hand, so that might be worth investigating, particularly when it comes to the jump stands where I feel plastic has many advantages. (You can still use wooden fillers etc). We find we can squeeze more jumps in by using upright jump stands than actual wings, also the plastic cups that swivel round the pole of the jump stand are good as you can build two jumps just using three stands (so perhaps use this to have two angled jumps in the middle of the arena). We also have skinny poles and skinny planks - using skinnies has the dual benefit of developing obedience and taking up less room in the school. Planks of any kind are great to have, as lots of horses can be funny about them. A few of the plastic jump block things are handy to have too - use them to make front rails for spreads or as fillers. We were also lucky enough to obtain one of the eventing multi jumps second hand as well, so can create corners, arrowheads etc., but you might find those hard to come by without purchasing new.

Thanks for the replies. Especially the examples of what you do at home. I do have a couple of plastic stands. I could cross drill these and get some more cups so that they could be used as corners. Also definately work getting some skinny poles.
 
I used to jump in a 20x40 - with the plastic three-sided stands and a few blocks, I could fit a course of 7 or so jumps in the school, including a couple of oxers, a barrel jump, at least one skinny (sometimes a corner) and a mini-ladder using the squiggly blocks on their side. You can fit it all in, but it taught my lad VERY bad habits about sharp turns (a green 17hh horse jumping courses in a 20x40 is not something I want to repeat again tbh...)...
