Has anyone ever used dog agility poles/jumps for your horses? They are significantly cheaper but obviously they will be smaller and lower quality.
Looking for cheaper alternatives to jumps have looked into drain pipes etc but would like more ideas

Wouldn’t recommend straw bales/barrels as should the horse leave a leg they can make a fairly innocent mistake into a rotational fall.

Drain pipes an absolute no as shatter.

Wood is best, timber merchants are much much cheaper. Barrels can be used as wings and you can buy pole cups to go on them.

We run dog agility at our horse show, no way would it be suitable for horses or ponies. We also run a mini clear round over much smaller/narrower jumps for ponies under 14.2, personally i would never have bought this set of jumps but some members of the committee saw them as a bargain. Young, green horses need a good wide jump to practice over, less chance to run out. A decent heavy pole is also safer, not light plastic poles. There are some Eventers in NZ who put videos on FB who re train race horses and they put a whole stretch of very low but differently arranged jumps across the school and their horses take to these really well. Invest in some good poles and build your facility up slowly.

No idea how cost effective it would be these days but when I was a kid my dad (good at DIY but that’s it) made me four pairs of wings. He then had a welder relative knock up some cups.

He was over the moon with himself and so was I. They were as well made as any you would buy anywhere too. I just drew him what I wanted and off he went.

So would it be worth finding someone a bit handy to have a go at building some wings for you, then the poles from a timber merchant?
