My boy can be touchy when he has his saddle put on, he had a very sore back when i first got him seven years ago, but he gets regular checks now, somedays you can just put the saddle on other days he trys to swing away sometimes goes quite panicky but calms down once the saddle is on, should i worry about this?

If you know are sure has no back issues, and he is being regularily monitored, it could be one of 2 things:

- remembered pain

- cold backed

I have a horse that is genuinely cold backed in the winter, and although fine to saddle, can be tense when mounting. I have found an equilibrium massage pad to be a real help, especially when used before hunting or comps.

On a very cold day, I sometimes lunge him before saddling, and again, he is more relaxed and have no issues.

If it is rembered pain I would imagine it is just a matter of being calm and consistent in his saddling routine, trying to ignore negative behaviour, but rewarding positive.

Have you spoken to a vet or saddler?

My girth is like this and its remembered pain. I find that if I get out of the routine of riding then we have to start from scratch again but if we are consistant and sensitive then shes much better. I just give ehr back a little massage then put saddle on and make sure in between doing up each girth hole, I walk her around. As soon as Im on shes fine.

Yes. I'd wonder if he doesn't like his saddle being put on because he finds it uncomfortable.
