Hi all, I've recently joined BSJA and went to my first event at the start of December. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and pony's a superstar who would have came first and second if we hadn't rolled a pole in each jump off!

However, I'm a complete newbie to all of it - never planned on affiliating as never thought I'd have a suitable pony! I do realise though that this is my last year as a junior, I'm 16 in June, and I'd like to make the most of it as I don't know whether I'll continue into senior BSJA (we're planning on BE for 2015 season as well). So my main question is; what do you have to do to try and qualify for the bigger shows? I've read some of the handbook and it mentions qualifying for Scope festival and hoys, etc. My pony is very reliable and competed up to 1.10m show jumping with previous owners, so I'd like to make the most of 2014 as I may not get to do it again. Also, this would enable me to set some realistic goals for showjumping in 2014!

I'm also not terribly clear on which names (novice, foxhunter, etc) go with which heights, could someone please help?:)

This is the pony's bsja profile: https://members.britishshowjumping.co.uk/horses/record/356326/5bbde0d1cf24464fa0069a14db4e9d7b/id3

Thank you, Ellie.

As the pony is a JD the world is you oyster ;) the heights are as follows in the 1st rounds...

Brit Novice 80cm
Discovery 90cm
Newcomers 1m
Foxhunter 1.10m

If you get 4 DC' s in any before 30th April this qualifys you for the 2nd rounds. These are then run over 3 rounds so get quite big, the top 10 I think it is then qualify for Scope as well as all triple clear rounds.

Blur Chip qualifiers ate also being run now which are direct qualifiers fit the Blue Chip Winter Championships in April. The top 8 qualify in those. All the classes & dates are on the Blue Chip Champs website ' it's a fab show & I think so much better than scope ;) )

POYS is also a fab show to experience if possible, we did it once before my daughter moved to seniors. You don't have to qualify to go, just enter although it is quite expensive!

I hope that helps, if you need any more help I can try my best ;) we did about 6yrs of juniors before my daughter moved to horses. Most of all, just enjoy! xx

Thank you, that's fabulous! It's all a lot clearer now!!

How much do the classes go up each round? Don't want to start too high and discover the fences will be massive!

I seem to think they only go up 5/10cm in jump offs, depends on the course builder too. We go to some venues that are always up to height & others that aren't. If I were you I would start in the British novice while you're still eligible & work your way up, the heights get bigger as you move through the 2nd rounds & to the finals at Scope xx

Do you roughly how much the heights go up each round?

I've got a double clear at discovery and have qualified for the second round (according to pony's record), so does that mean I can't jump at novice now?

You can also qualfy for Scope via special qualifying classes during the summer. Look on the BS website for dates. If you go to Scope, its much better if you have qualified for at least two classes or else its a very long drawn out process. Its a great week, but again quite expensive! Qualifying second round at discovery does not stop you doing Brit Nov as long as the pony's winnings dont put him out.

Thank you Rum Tum, do you know how much you have to win before you're out of novice?

So, do I need four double clears to qualify for second rounds or just the one?

not sure if it is the same in juniors, but we were recently informed that there is a 15cm allowance on the height of fences in senior bsja. So 90cm can go to 1.05m in the 1st round then up again for the jump off. This may not been 100% true and I'm sure someone with more knowledge will correct me if i'm wrong :)

You need 4 double clears in the classes that tinap listed above. Some other champs are direct qualification from one result. If you are on Facebook there is a page called BS Juniors A Beginners Guide which is friendly and welcoming, and you'll always get answers on there. Good luck with your season.

When I was in juniors £99 nominal winnings got you out of novice but could be different now. When you win money you'll get the actual amount e.g £25 but only a certain % of this goes on your ponies record.

As I say could be different now.

Thank you everyone for your help!
Another thing, I don't really understand nominal and actual winnings?

It's just done that way so you don't move up too quickly - if you won 4 BN classes with winnings of £25 each you'd very quickly be out of novice so they have the notional winnings so it takes a bit longer. Have a read through the rule book whenever you get a spare minute & I promise it isn't as complicated as it first seems :) x
