Hell was avoided.
I decided I probably wasn't good enough so saved both myself and owner the embarrasment and cancelled.

I don't know if you can post a 'kick up the arse' but consider it on its way! If you ever get an opportunity like that again bloody GO for it!!! The worse that could happen is you and the owner could agree you were not up to the job. But you only live once and as corney as it is 'Carpe Diem'.
Take every chance you get and make the best of it (I'm speaking from experience, I turned down a ride once and seriously regretted it later).
Sorry I didn't mean to harp on at you as I reckon you know whats best, I hope you find a nice owner with horses you feel you could ride to help you. And good luck with stuff this year.
