for all the eventers out there ( and anyone else!) Who do you think are technically the most talented event riders around -competing now or retired???
my top five would be:
1. Ginny leng
2. Mark Todd
3. Blythe Tait
4. Pippa Funnell
5. Mary King

1) Ginny Leng - my childhood heroine
2) Lucinda green
3) Mary King - she never, ever blames her horses
4) Ian Stark
5) Ruth Edge - one to watch

1. Toddy. best of the best, no question. don't forget that his 2nd Olympic Gold test on Charisma was deemed more technically correct than the pure dressage gold winner, and that Toddy also rode to Olympic level at pure SJ.
2. Mary King. so stylish, so good-tempered even when it goes wrong, so lovely to her fans, so patient and kind to her horses. Definitely the best eventer in the world at the moment.
3. WFP - no explanation required!

Pretty similar to Kerilli but would add Lucinda Green and Richard Meade.

Toddy, Mary King, Lucinda Green and Ian Stark - will never forget his team round xc at Sydney, sheer professionalism.

Would probably also say Jonty Evans after his Badminton 07 xc round - utter brilliance

I wouldn't call the likes of Andrew Nicholson and LG as technically copybook, and I know the latter would be the first to admit it. It's their flair, instinctive reactions and understanding of their mount, plus their guts to get to the other side that make them legendary.

I would say Ginny Elliott - never left anything to chance.
2. Shelia Watson - was perhaps the first 'proper' professional eventer?
3. Andrew Hoy when aboard Darren Powers
4. Phillip Dutton
Plus the usual suspects, eg Toddy and Will. Ruth Edge will be the world's best eventer in five years, I hope!

Toddy - wonderful horseman, a joy to watch, honestly don't think I've seen better eventing.
Lucinda - a real mistress of her trade; her record on different horses speaks for itself I think.
Caroline Pratt - under rated, did well with her horse power and a very nice person to boot, very sad loss.
Andrew Nicholson - Love watching him, he's a trier.
My one for the future if I have to stick at one, will be Harry Meade. The only times I have seen him, he's been quietly very stylish, very impressed.

Ginny Elliot would be my top one, don't really know what my others would be

I LOVED reading about her Priceless and Night Cap.

After a lot of further thought, i'd add David O'Connor. A supremely stylish and quiet rider, and pure poetry in motion on the flat, one of the few eventers who could make their horse dance in the dressage. on Gilt Edge especially, no-one could touch him. the fact that he's now giving so much back to horse sports in the u.s.a. is a huge point in his favour too, in my book.

Yep Toddy, what a man (does everyone remember that amazing Badminton xc with one iron?!), Ginny Leng, Lucinda green, Blythe Tait, Mary King, William F-P. Sorry, that's 6 but hey ho!

Mark Todd
Fabio Magini (sp) (Italian)He is a real natural and a total horseman. If he was in this country he would give everyone a run for their money!
Andrew Hoy

I can't think of any others right now, but what was the name of the frenchman riding Icare d'Auzay, the horse that got staked and died at Badminton last year? Have only seen him ride that one time, but that round up until that point was simply breathtaking.

I think ginny and toddy were a real class apart in the 80's&90's. Ginny was a complete perfectionist and left nothing to chance- horses always well prepared and beautifully schooled and she always strived to improve herself- her position xc was always immaculate! Toddy was just pure talent-at the 1992 olympics he was on the eventing team and the pure sj team......class!
