If someone said to you that you could keep your horse in their stable, with grazing all for free in exchange for looking after your horse cos you are away for a few days a week, and you would look after theirs when they go away.

What would you say???

If thats really all there is too it then it sounds good! But maybe they're planning on going away a lot...

So essentially - stable your horse for free in return for some work?

Yep - sounds like a great deal.

I think you'd have to get firm confirmation of whats expected from you for the free stable. I'd only do it if the horse was well behaved and wasn't going to be a headache to look after.

If you want to go ahead then I would suggest you draw up a written agreement of what you expect of each other. What the periods of time away would be - would there be any term of absence that would be unacceptable to either party. Include a notice period because you don't want to be turfed out without any warning. Cover things like worming, poo picking etc. As Vicijp rightly says, these sort of arrangements can often go pearshaped if people don't thrash out all the details right at the start.

The other point to assess is what you are giving up to move there. If you are in a lovely yard and you move and things don't work out, are you likely to get your space back?

nothing is set in stone yet, just a suggestion, its not actually me who has been asked to do it, its my friend. I told her she might need a written agreement. Part of the agreement would be the other person would look after y friends horse when she is away also.

It is like too good to be true, but if it works out it would be perfect.

t is expected of them. To some people looking after their horse could mean turning out in the morning, three feeds a day, bring in brushed, riden in the afternoon, mucked out, bathed once a week, lunged every morning etc etc, wheras some would say give him a feed and some hay in the field once a day.
