Just a pointless little question

Why do people use haynets? I know it's a stupid question but I've been pondering on it for a while now... I know horses can get their legs caught in them and it's unnatural for them to eat something so high up, so why do people use them? Is it because it makes the horse eat more slowly, or to reduce wastage, or is it another reason?

i sometimes use because the dizzy one pulls the hay all over the stable and wees on it

i used to use one for the nappy one as she'd eat far too quickly but can't trust her not to get caught up/destroy so both mine now fed from the floor. when its gone, its gone!!

My big one eats far too quickly if it's on the floor and the little one drags it all over the place and wee's on it. Thinking of getting a hay bar for the big one and little one is too small so he'll have to still have his hay net, as he wouldn't reach the bottom of a haybar I don't think!

We use them to stop them eating so fast in summer, winter when the grass is poor they just get it lobed in a corner. Unfortunatly haybars are not an option as our boxes are original 1886

prince poos and wees on it like its straw so it such a waste! but im looking at getting a haybar for the winter!!

i give my gelding a haynet as i have to restrict his food in the winter, so i give him his hay in a net to make it last him longer as it slows his eating down, my mare just gets hers on the floor + has as much as she can eat.

Reduce wastage. Most of mine drag it round the bed and one in particular paws it like she's digging for gold (well carrots maybe

).

all of the above is why we use them but it is always better if we don't as it is natural for horses to eat off the ground and it makes sure they stretch their necks to get there.
