Hi all, I'm mainly a lurker answering the odd thread but I just wanted to make my own to just say how proud I am of my horse and what we've achieved so far! It may be a little long...

I bought him March 2017 as something to get back into competing on as my old pony had been retired for 2 years. He was the second horse I viewed (the first being that morning!) Only 2 weeks after starting to look, there were many reasons why I went for him so quickly but that's not for here. Soon after purchase I discovered I had lost all my nerve for jumping which was a disaster! I had to re start, jumping only tiny cross poles which still terrified me but I wanted to work on it.
Unfortunately in May he ruptured a tendon so spent the whole summer on box rest, two horses and neither rideable...then I sadly lost my old pony.

Fast forward to March/April this year after all the rehab work and I start getting back to jumping, we had our first competition in April which was a 60cm and a 70cm. Well, the 60 was ok (still terrified) and we came 5th 😊 but the 70 was an absolute disaster. He then realised that once I was too nervous to do anything he could run out as many times as he liked!

From then I worked on building my confidence, having lessons and doing clinics, jumping tiny courses and slowly building them up. Learning how to ride him too, he's very different to my old pony who would literally jump anything with no instruction needed!

Now is the whole point of the post really, we are now happily popping round 60/70 courses, he absolutely loves xc and we will fly over 80 or even 90 jumps out there, we have quite a few winnings now, we were working hunter reserve champion at a local show, won a 60 hunter trial AND and 80 pairs hunter trial (only about 2 jumps were 80...) and I am just so so so proud of how much we've come together and have really clicked into a team. Don't get me wrong he will still throw in an odd nip to the side if I'm not 100% commited to the jump but I'm much better at spotting it.

Our aim is to do a BE80 so hopefully in the next few years we will manage it 😊 love him so much.

I'm not sure how to add photos or I'd add the one of me jumping him 1m05 grinning away, there's no way that would've happened only a few months ago!

That really made me smile reading that! Nerves are a hard thing to get over and it sounds like you have a very good Horse to progress on! lovely thread :)

I agree LB and sometimes finding that one thing that your horse really likes doing makes other things fall into place. I realised very quickly that my lovely wee Arab hates schooling but get him out in the wild and there is nowhere he won't go and he bounces along exploring new places and seeing strange things very happily indeed. Well done OP and the best of luck for your future plans for you both. x

Well done you, it can be hard work, but it is so worth it when it all comes together! Sounds like you are well on your way to BE80!

Thank you, I remember going to that first competition feeling so sick and dosed up on rescue remedy, now I look forward to them!
He's such a lovely boy, and he had really low mileage when I got him so a lot of what I've been doing with him are firsts for him, he's taking it all in his stride and getting more confident as I am.

That's brilliant. I was a terrified jumper too a few years ago. I bailed out of my first 50cm clear round course after the first jump because I thought I was going to be sick. I was physically shaking, I can honestly say going from X-poles to 60 was MUCH harder than going from 60 to 90 so you are well on your way to BE80. Good luck!

I bailed in the first 70 course I did after the third run out, I thought I was going to vomit everywhere with the nerves! I look back at what I used to do with my 13hh pony and wish I was half as confident but we are definitely getting there!
I think I've worked out photos...

Wide corner (for me anyway! Wide jumps are my nemesis)

And finally...the 1m05! Yes I had to do it as a double ha ha

I'm just so proud of how far we've come in such a short time! I love showing him off.

I've also noticed how much his technique has improved as we've been jumping bigger, he used to dangle his front legs so much which I think was because they were too small to properly jump over :-P

And now because I've worked it out, here is also a picture of how handsome he is (credit to emmpix.co.uk, I have purchased this photo) excuse the plaits, there was no m&m workers at the show I went to!

Congratulations and what a lovely horse you have.

Years ago I lost my confidence jumping and went back to poles on the ground - which caused me to hyperventilate! With a very good trainer I got my mojo back and had great fun again.

Congratulations! Those jumps look monstrous to someone who about to start xc and never done anything other than cross poles and pretty damned twitchy. I love stories where people have overcome nerves it’s brilliant:)

Thanks all :-) nerves are such a problem, I love jumping and competing but I have to remember that I do! I think my friends on social media get fed up of me posting jumping photos all the time so it's nice to share our achievements with others who understand!
Rumtytum I bet you will love xc :-)

Fabulous pics! Those fences are BIG. No worries for BE80. Go for it.

Nerves are weird. Not that long ago my ultimate ambition was to jump the 'big log' on the farm ride where I am on livery. I was in awe of anyone who did it. A few weeks ago I went round the farm ride and asked what they had done with the 'big log' as there was this tiny one where it used to be........
