Just a quickie on visiting loan horse and trespassing?

Number one. I would go to where the horse is and introduce myself to the land owner, this would clear the act of any form of trespassing. He is your horse so you have every right to see him.

Number two. If the loan contract is up for renewal then I would be looking to get my horse back.

Number three. If they are ignoring your phone calls etc that too would be setting alarm bells in my ears.

Have you seen the horse a all since he went out on loan.

Your post just reminded me of the people randomly in my field yesterday hence my new thread :) but if you're not happy it's your horse so I would go over there. Have you managed to go yet?

Just an update - he is home. Went to see him unannounced, left in tears, went straight back to get the truck and trailer.

Its not a total horror story, he wasnt knee high in poo and in a condition score of 0..However I run both my fingers down either side of his spine and count every rib so I would say he would be a a score of 2, there isnt anything left to lose now other than muscle. His feet look like they need a decent farrier and he has early signs of mud fever on his hind legs. His coat seems ok - it has a shine to it.

I am now getting abuse - seems her phone works today! She has been on holiday and had someone who is reg. with BS looking after him (means nothing anyone can be reg. with the BS!!) her car is broken so couldnt get up there, I have not only broken her heart but her little sisters.etc. Im sorry but you have a responsibilty to look after a horse you get a bus, taxi, cycle or bloomin teleport... whatever as long as you get there to see the horse. Apparently he was a pile of bones when he arrived - he had dropped a little condition but then again we were just coming out of winter and lacked muscle due to me being unable to ride because of a knee injury, hence the loan.

The vet is out this afternoon, so will ask whether a written report can be done, that way if she tells me his condition is amazing I can send her a copy of what the vet has said.

Poor old boy - I should have been up sooner but my lack of balls and being too polite prevented me from sticking my neck out sooner. Hindsight is marvellous but for a long time I will feel guilty for him :(

It was just as well she did not have his passport.

There is no excuse for a horse to be in that condition. We have had a very good growing year so far and there is plenty of grass around.

Unfortunately this is not an unusual story when a horse goes out on loan.I have heard of many stories from others.

I have recently been helping a friend get her horse back. The girl who my friend loaned her horse to just kept telling us more lies. In the end she owed me money, but fortunately I had her tack and will sell it to recoup that money.

Not everybody is bad, there are some nice people who have horses on loan and look after them well.

I'm glad you have your boy back. That will teach the other person a lesson.

Just an update - he is home

Good :)

Hope you have kept a log of all the texts/emails etc just in case she kicks off, but as she:
Would not return your calls
Would not meet to get contract renewed

She does not have a leg to stand on anyway & no legal claim whatsoever - all you might get is nasty words, but who cares as long as the horse is going to be okay.

The horse is YOURS & YOU have his passport.

End of sorry story, hope horse picks up & you find someone nice to ride him - whilst under your care at home

Out of interest, did you tell anyone you were taking the horse or did you just go and get it? Sorry being nosey

Glad he is back and hopefully no long term harm done. It does annoy me with this kind of thing. I will be looking for a loan horse for my daughter in a year or two.. Who will trust us I wonder ?
I will also have to loan out her outgrown pony who will I trust ?

I went and picked him up when he was home and I had him settled with the biggest amount of hay anyone has ever seen I text the girl to say he was home.

I had the yard owners permission to go on the yard, she was there and another lady who looks after a little old pony was there to help and be a witness.

I also had permission use my bolt cutters to get into their store room and take my rugs and tack - there was a rather large amount!!

Maree t - It is just a few that gives a lots of people a bad name. I am so lucky to have found the best ever loaner for my mare. Although after this I shall be making more unannounced visits to double check all is ok. However this lady has been sharing my mare for several months and with winter coming wanted more facilities so moved her into livery.. though will be back soon as I get my arena built!! :)

Heres some pics... glad I got to him sooner rather than later...

So glad you have him back, you definitely did the right thing and must be so relieved to have him safe at home with you. Also good to hear you got your posessions back! Don't understand how some people can be so ungrateful and let other peoples horses get into a bad state x

Poor horse!
The amount of muscle-atrophy along the topline is frightful, and I actually worry about the look of the neck. I'd definitely get his feet and back checked thoroughly. Good luck!

Just to say go careful with the land owner.

The yard our horses are at has pretty tight security (electric gates et al) and a YO that would be onto a stranger scarily quickly, with an ask questions later approach. He's a nice chap, but a stranger on the yard is a no-no.

Hope you get peace of mind.

Poor poor boy....well done for taking decisive action & the loanee hasn't got a leg to stand on. Can't believe she's protesting when she shld be hanging her head in shame.

Thank you, he seems to have perked up already so will move him to the big field to munch away on grass in a few days once hes got to have a full belly of hay again.

Gosh he is a lot skinnier than I expected from your description, well done for getting him back.

Had she been riding him? I certainly wouldn't be riding a horse with that amount of muscle wastage over his spine.

Out of interest, do you have pictures of him just before he went out on loan?

Just to tie up - the passport needs to stay with the horse at all times, EXCEPT when they are at rest / at grass / stabled.

It then needs to be within 3 hours of producing. I wouldn't give a loaner my passport unless I'd known them implicably for years. I'd give them a copy, and if they were competing it would go out with them and ome straight back to me.

It may not be proof of ownership, but there are things you can do with a passport that could lose an owner their horse.

Glad you got him back, hope he keeps getting better :D

Glad you've got him home. Looks like the loaner has ragged him about and not really cared if he was working properly :( this could have so easily have had a different ending if you hadn't gone to see him. Good on you :)

So glad you managed to get to see him/get him home before he got any worse!

I will never understand people who take horses on loan and not look after them! What on earth goes through their minds... makes me so angry, after loaning a couple of different horses in my time I just do not understand it. I have always returned the horses in the same condition (or if I'm honest better condition)!

Good decision, well done.

Friend loaned out her young geling (5) to a 'professional' groom with strict loan agreement. Found out 18 months later (she had been in regular contact but a long way for visits) he had been dumped on mutual friend. Loaner disappeared, didn't pay any keep to friend & didn't check to see how he was (despite swearing undying love for him). Turns out he'd moved yards about every 2-3 months, as she kept getting sack for being such poor employee, he'd been stabled excessively, cut on his face hadn't recieved vet treatment & turned bad. Friend took him back, girl was told after event. Instead of apologising for her poor treatment of horse she got aggressive demanding him back. Needless to say that hasn't happened. Seems like some people when they know they've done wrong & been caught turn on the attack rather than admit their mistakes.

Good move on bringing him straight home. He is fading away fast and needs to be back home with his mum who knows exactly how to care for him. How this girl has the cheek to get upset and agry about him being removed is beyond me. She doesnt have a leg to stand on, especially when you send her a copy of the vets notes and tell her your taking action.

He is back where he belongs now and you know you will do your absolute best to bring him back round again. Maybe keep us all updated weekly with some photos of his improvement?

Well done you for taking him back. This girl clearly doesnt know how to care for a horse.
