I'm just considering taking off my pony's shoes and I was wondering if podiatrists/barefoot trimmers are insured the same way as farriers are. You may be able to tell I'm a tad nervous as taking a massive step into the unknown here and really need a bit of reassurance.

If you have a good farrier you can carry on using them. Many are much more supportive of BF than they used to be. Have a chat. I don't know about their insurance, but some insurers have owner insurance issues round BF trimmers.

The trimmers I enquired with were both insured (they'd be mad not to be surely!)

My horse insurance doesn't allow for using a trimmer but as his feet are excluded anyway  ;).

My farrier was happy with taking shoes off but (by his own admission) did not have sufficient experience of rehabbing pathologies without shoes .. we had already attempted with.

Yes they are recommended to get insurance once set up in business. When I was training the insurance that u could get as a barefoot trimmer was the same as a trainee farrier but there may b a more specific one available now. X
