My lovely hubby has been through an ordeal today. Whilst attempting to bath my daughters mare she decided to leg it. My hubby ran after her, and she had a little hissy fit . She somehow stamped on his foot and twisted, taking his little toe with her. All that was left was some mangled flesh and a visible toe bone. He was wearing trainers.
He is now waiting to see what they are going to do with his open crush fracture.
So often i have popped up the yard with my pumps on, spesh during the summer when 'just checking'... Never again ! Steel toe caps for me...
 
Ouch !!! Hope he mends quickly. I've often popped to the yard on my way from somewhere nice with flipflops or nice plimsole type shoes. I cringe and hold at arms length the whole way.

I even put on my short boots with no socks the other day :eek: proper gritty inside but at least my feet would be a bit safer.
 
Ouch! Although I've heard of people getting all toes sliced off in steel toe caps. I'll stick to good supportive yard boots/riding boots
 
I feel awful, I had my boots on... Called him because he can run faster, well could. Now he is in agony, off work for the foreseeable future and I have half a clean horse :-)
 
Ouch!! What a nasty accident, poor guy. I hope his foot heals soon. It's so easy to forget what *might* happen when handling horses.

Really sorry for your poor hubby, at least you can give him lots of TLC !
Also echo the danger of steel toe caps. Many are not designed to take the weight of a horse and can cave in so shop wisely for those that are upto the job .
 
Thankyou all, it certainly does make you think about the 'what ifs'... if I was to think about them too much I wouldn't have horses!

As long as they meet safety standards this is impossible - it's been tested extensively. They are tested with 3 or 4 tonnes put through a small contact area dropped on them. No horse will put down more pressure than that.
 
You've really made me think now, I went to the yard today in converse plimsolls and turned out in them. As from tomorrow my mucker boots are coming out of the garage and in the car! Hope he makes a quick recovery.
 
Oooh, nasty accident, hope his foot heals well and he can keep on top of the pain in the meantime. Has made me think about footwear too, usually daughter and I have our riding/yard boots on, but when 11yo son comes...he has trainers, :eek: and he isn't really horse savvy but likes to help groom.
 
flipping nora... and he didnt come back and finish bathing the horse... shameful behaviour!:mad:

Ouchy! Brought mine in wearing trainers today, don't own a pair of steel toe caps come to think of it.

Hope your hubby is mended soon!
 
how that must have hurt.my girl stands on my feet in boots snd trainers and my feet have sufferedbad but worry about steel toe caps! hope is goin to be ok
 
thats terrible...
i think u should tell ur lovely hubby to find a good lawyer, so that he can sue u for compensation for losing his toe...
 
Funny enough he did mention the 'Norfolk vs betty Jones (horse name)'... Its ok, I suspect I'm never gonna hear the end of this. Good job I love him!
