This is our second year with beautiful boy.

Last year when he was shedding he got loads of grey on his hind quarter ( made me panic slightly, ax he is jet black) when he had finished shedding he wad back to black ( see what I did there ?)

He has more grey this year, but again it is coming back to black, sorry for the song title again :D

I digress, do your jet black horses/ ponies do this colour change for few weeks at this time of year ?

Our sheltie is jet black and she goes a very peculiar grey/brown as the old coat comes out. The welshie has black legs and she goes grey down the back of the cannons as her coat changes too.

well I don't get intermittent gray patches, but as my boy goes older he is going permentantly grey, his muzzle is grey all the time now.
but he does go brown in the very hot sunny weather, assume his hair is bleached by the sun.

My dun goes brown on any unclipped patches when he looses the last bits of his coat. So similar could happen to a balck horse I would have thought.

My cob has got some brown hair around his face and where he is clipped, I hope it won't last through the summer as I wish to do some showing with him

Sorry if this sounds really stupid, but are you sure its not grease in his coat coming out? Puz has a brown butt, and when she sheds it goes a totally different colour due to the grease! x

My first year with a black horse and I had a similar worry as along the edges of where his clip meets the non clipped bits he was going a yucky sandy colour but luckily it seems to be sorting itself and now looks black all over and lovely and shiny :)

my dun is a different colour every summer! she's really light in the winter, her clipped bit looks like a donkey colour! she loses soooo much white hair at this time of year, gets really dark brown/black underneat the dun bit and then it goes a sort of golden dun colour eventually! however, one year someone said to me "are those 2 bays yours" :(

Here is a photo, best I could do on my phone :)

Sorry my black only changes colour when clipped when she goes a grey colour... Otherwise winter summer coat is the same (bar some sun bleach towards the mid to end of summer)

It is funny that he goes this grey and in another month it will all be gone, and back to his lovely black self :)

It does say on his passport black/grey, but I suppose when he was born it was unclear wether he would stay black or eventually grey out.

Funny little chap :)

Mine just stays black, only changes when clipped when she goes to an iron grey colour and mid to late summer gets some sun bleach. (if we get any sun!!!)

hi i think your horse may be what is called a rabicano roan or skunk roan as is mine,
it seems to start at the flank area & get more every year / coat change.
you often get white hairs in the top of tail too.
if you google it you will see lots of pics
