I have a 15.2hh Cob X ID, hes a good doer and quite fizzy in nature.
At the min hes on hi fi light and castle feeds emerald mix, but just asking around to see what people reccommend i feed and supplement him? Ideally I would like to keep him as calm as possible, and wondering if anyone has had any experience also with calmers etc in particular D & H placid.

thanks in advance and please be nice this is my first post :)

Hi and welcome, I wouldn't have thought an ID x needs any feed at all. I would certainly change the Hi Fi as it sends some horses loco due to the high protein. I give my ID Molichaff calmer with some Magnesium oxide mixed in, he only has the moli to feed the magox, it is literally a handful
Do you feed hay or haylage?

he is on hay at the minute but will be moving to a new yard soon where haylage is supplied, but there is not much grass there so until it comes through in the next few weeks i've wanted to give him that extra hard feed you know?

sorry didnt read all of your post (its been a long day)! I was thinking of using the mollichaf calmer, you find it ok? I only feed a handfull of chaff and handfull of mix to keep him happy as all the other horses are fed the same time too, and it keeps me at ease too while the fields are still muddy with no grass

I find Molichaff calmer good as it has all the vita/mins added but I do only feed it to get the magox in him which is good for fizzy horses (he isn't fizzy) don't underestimate the impact of even a small amount of feed on an already fizzy good doer, especially if it has sugar. I would be really wary of haylage it can be like rocket fuel! My good doers do really live on fresh air,as they are meant to, more forage and less feed is my principle but I still have to monitor and restrict hay to keep them trim and calm headed.

You could try fast fibre by allen and page. It is extremey low in sugar/starch and no molasses but it also includes essential vits and mins and yeast to aid digestion and a few other things that I forget. I add linseed to mine because my girl is a poor doer but you wouldn't need to add anything. A bag goes a long way because you soak the pellets for a short amount of time and costs just eight pound fifty. I find my girl who is an arab isn't fizzy on it and although she is a fussy eater, she absolutely loves it.

I would definitely cut out the mix for a fizzy good doer! Not enough grass does not mean you need to feed hard feed - hay or haylage is a much better substitute for grass than mix! If you are worried about vit/mins then you can always feed a handful of chaff with a vit/min supplement mixed in.

Try looking at D&H Hi Fi Mollasses Free. Its only got 1.5% starch and 2.5% sugar (hay is said to be 10% sugar). Has worked on my very hot boy. I supplement with Equivits but do not feed anything else as he does not need it.

Would be inclined to feed less if you are about to move to a place with more grass. Its easier to put weight on rather than lose it as we all know

I have used Placid mix worked aamzing for one and not at all for the other.

I am another dont feed...well she gets a one hand handful of hi fi nuts when she comes in but thats all I don't count tht.

Thanks everyone, going to just give him a handful of mollichaf calmer and cut everything else out. Thanks again for your help x

This ^^
Another vote for no feed here :)
Ad-lib hay/haylage should be all you need - even through winter with a good doer.
I just feed a handful of Fast Fibre to get a supplements in.
