One of my boys has recently been brought back into work after seemingly endless problems and we're finally clicking and he's starting to muscle up and perform under saddle.

Just lately he's a new horse, his whole outlook is changing, his evil temper is subsiding and he's really keen to work. I think the unplanned break did him good.

lots of people around my area enjoy putting my ex racers down but I think they're starting to eat their words!!!!

Oh and one of my other ex racer boy who has also been behaving exceptionally well apart from todays blip when he woudn't be caught!

He looks gorgeous. My ex girlfriend and I have had Green Green Desert who was notoriously enigmatic for a number of years now. He can still be difficult on times but actually I have seen far more obstinate behaviour from little girls' ponies.


I think like greyhounds the idea of ex racers puts people off but actually they can be very rewarding; and generally because they have been used to being worked in a string, they are pretty well behaved. Hopefully more people will give then a chance and its good to see yours looking so happy.

Our Desi owes nobody anything so he is just a pet now but also he is a handsome model for my artwork. I enclose an image I did of him called "Friend or Foe? Thoroughbred Gothic"

Also yes it is nice when you think that these horses were once considered worth fortunes. They are still the same horse; so its nice. Green Green Desert was winter favourite for the two thousand guineas as a two year old and bred by Gainsborough Stud. Had his own ideas about the game and was ridden by six champion jockeys including Piggott but it wasn't until he went jumping he came into his own; won lots of races for Sherwood and then Paul Nicholls and was 4th in the Queen Mother champion chase.
Not much good for hunting though: hates dogs. On the plus side he's a one horse foxhunt. A fox killed the pigeon he adored that used to sit on his withers in the box and now if he sees a fox he gives chase ears back head to ground.

I've just got back on my ex-racer after a year off. Needing some advice but will add a separate post.

What do you feed yours? Any calmer involved?
 
They are VERY similar aren't they, not just markings but type too

He's lived out completely for the last 14 months which has helped chill him. He gets alfa a oil and baileys number four with pink powder but no calmer
 
They both look gorgeous, loving ex racers, can't believe how many go for peanuts when many are such beautiful and talented horses.
 
your two looks lovely.. a friend of mine bought a ex racer a year back now shes selling him ,she's just realise he was too much for her teenage girls...i ride him and hes lovely...

They are both lovely looking ! i have a ex racer as well and although we are just happy hackers i wouldn't change him for the world !
 
They look fab. I think there is not the same stigma attached to ex racers that ther was. They have become a bit fashionable of late.
I have had mine for 6 years and she is a brilliant horse. It took some work to get her there but it has been so worth it. My friends joke about her plodding out on a hack. It is not difficult to get her up the gears tho'.

Someone commented that she was amazed that she was an ex racer because she doesn't thorw her head around and has brakes
