Now we have to wait 48 hours to find out if our application has been successful. Feeling a little nervous, I've not had a rescue before. He's an elderly dog and we'd absolutely love to give him a family to love for his twilight years. Here's hoping, wish us luck :)

Thanks both :) I'm not sure if the rescue place will approve us or not as we do have young children, but if you don't ask you don't get I suppose. He looks/sounds a lovely boy and the thought of him spending the rest of his days in kennels brings tears to my eyes, poor lad. Keeping everything crossed :)

Good luck

I love that you are thinking of giving an oldie a chance - good for you! You've made me feel all warm and fuzzy for you :)

Thanks all :) will let you know how if/when we hear anything. I know we may not have loads of time with him if we're successful, but it would be worth the upset of saying goodbye soon-ish to know we'd provided him a home and a family at the end :) oh no, I seem to have pinned my hopes on him. Must try not to get hopes up too high just in case!

I saw the documentary about grey muzzle rescue in the states. It touched my heart more than anything . When I stop having to traipse around the country with my daughter then I intend adding some oldies to the pack.
Best of luck to you x

Just a quick update: sadly I have had no response from the rescue place re. our application for the old boy :( I may give it a couple more days and give them a call, but the process says that they will be in contact within 48 hours if the application has been successful. Boo! Never mind :(

Oh thats a shame but dont give up, there are loads of oldies looking for a special home and they get overlooked, if no joy let me know and I may be able to find someone else for you.

That is such a shame, I was really keeping my fingers crossed for you! The oldies are always the ones who get to me, not the puppies however sweet they may be, I really admire you for taking on an older dog - that is what I'll be doing in the future as and when I get a space

Oh that's pants Clare85. Is it worth ring them? I'd give it a go. If it hasn't worked out for you this time, I'm sure there is a rescue pup somewhere just waiting for you to find them. Please don't give up.

Oh that's real shame as people like you willing to take on oldies are few and far between!

Another greyhound Lev? :D

Of course, is there any other breed? :p :D :D My oldest is 12 so not that old but definitely getting on, my other three are 9 (2 of them) and 8 so I guess I am getting used to having older ones :)

Ring them. I know many rescues and not a single one will actually get back in the time thy say. They just get so busy and overwhelmed. Don't just wait or give up, be proactive :)

If this proves a dead end, have a look at the Oldies Dog Club. Lots of lovely dogs looking for homes on there. Oldies have so much to offer and generally far less demanding than a younger dog.

Ha ha I love whippets too :) :) the best hot water bottles EVER!!!

yup! Mine has been having a total emotional break down over the last week or so (not a whippet trait! Just a trait of a dog that was very damaged by his very early days) Anyway, my OH got up from nights and said he had had a stomach ache and Dylan had burrowed his way up from the bottom of the bed, where he is supposed to sleep, and curled up against his stomach and it had gone away. I fractured my spine a few years ago and Dilly seems to prefer to sleep against my back where it was injured. Hes a difficult pain in the butt, but he totally gets away with it as hes such a loving little suck up  Hes my soul mate and the actual love of my life :)

any news? if you aren't lucky, there are a LOT of rescues around and its worth it to keep going. Also, might be worth asking on here who deals with rescues and what are the normal gotchas that would make a rescue turn you down.

I you're into long dogs 3 charities I would recommend are Hounds First Sighthoubd Rescue, Lurcher Link and Greyhound Gap.

If you are looking for an older dog then the Cinnamon Trust often have older dogs of all shapes and sizes. Our girlie has been with us for 2 years and she is a bit of a staff x but we call her the dingo as that is what she looks like. She is somewhere between 11 and 12 but has been a real treasure. Older dogs are so rewarding and she is so easy and well mannered. She took a while to come out of her shell but now joins the others scrounging, getting on the furniture and random barking sessions - but that is my fault not hers.
I would have another old dog in a heartbeat. The Cinnamon Trust will cover vets bills for non routine stuff as well which may help people to take on an older dog as the costs can mount and insurance can be difficult.
We choose not to claim from them but if the fear of vet bills is stopping anyone then please look into this.
