At about 1 in the morning, unable to sleep I had this weird urge to attempt to draw my pony so I did this...second horses head I have ever tried to draw and feel free to have a giggle, I am no artist! The whole right side of his head seems to be distorted higher than the left!!
I had put it up in the living in place of one of my mum's pictures and she reswapped them grr! I thought it might as well go somewhere so posting on here to see what people think :) And other more talented people could post their drawings? Horse and Hound gallery :D

Darn sight better than what I can do...
I'm still at 'stick figure' stage with my artistic skills, so will be leaving showing off drawings to the experts!

Very well done... esp at 1am!

I think it's rather good!

I'd be really proud if I'd drawn it, and if my daughter had drawn it, it would be taking pride of place in the living room! Well done :)

I think my mother prefers landscapey watercolour type pictures :(
I don't have the patience to practice, I have no idea why I felt the need to do this in the middle of the night - it is very unme-ish to do something that requires patience and sitting down for too long!
Thank you very much though all of you :)

I think it's lovely!
Although proportions may be a bit off, the shading is very good! I'm actually an art student and I have never tried a pencil portrait like that because I think i'd be absolutely useless at getting the shading right.

I think that is really good! Your shading looks excellent. I have to say my drawing is sooooo bad that I would be super happy if I could draw like you! You need to practice with proportions a bit and then you could start doing them for others. You have a talent you should use it :-)

I think it's very good, well worth finding some time to practise. If you hold your work up to a mirror, it shows up any faults more easily.

I think it's better than you realise. :) Practice, and work from a photo. Draw a grid over the photo which you can scale up on your paper to get the dimensions right. :)

Here's one of mine.

It's good :).
Just practise lots, use photos like FionaM12 said :).
Now you have taken the huge step to publicly display your drawing, I'm going to do it too ! :D
I've very recently started attempting to paint with acrylics. No art background at all since 2nd year in high school, which was in the early 80's
So, being brave, for the first time on display to the "public" (only FB friends have seen these), my first attempts at horse portraits :o
First one EVER completed. My Mum likes it enough that she has put it in a frame. Me ? I think it's rubbish :o

Second completed. I did this one to "play around" with getting the shading and hair texture.

I'm working on this one now. It's from a photo, and it's my friend's 4yo Welsh Cob. Needs finishing :)

Then, since posting the above 3 on FB, other friends have asked me to do portraits of their horses
I have drawn basic sketches (3 so far), to get the proportions and details in the right place. These 3 sketches are from photos (drawn whilst looking at each photo on my computer screen).
Sketch 1 - 2yo Welsh C gelding (chestnut with flaxen mane)

Sketch 2 - Tb x welsh Cob mare (black)

Sketch 3 - 7yo Welsh D Stallion (black)

There isn't a lot of shading on these as they are going to be finished in acrylics.
Keep drawing ! :D

Yours are all amazing, and thank you for the tips on drawing a grid over the photograph etc :)

I think I would be awful trying to paint a horse - For my Gcse and AS art everything I did was "abstract" - as in completely rubbish paint flicky random brush strokes ;) I was incapable of anything more complex!
