When I did not have transport I would phone up the local chap and PAY full wack to go to a show, go to a fun ride, go to the vets.

I am very lucky and was brought a horse box by hubby...... so why should I now be the one to be made to feel guilty if I won't give x a lift to the park, y a lift to the show I am going too - and why does everyone think I will take off half a day to take there wonderful neddie to the vets for a treatment or move there horse onto of off the yard.

Oh and god forbid you have dared to have a drink and cant run so and so to Liverpool.

Full to the back teeth of the lot of it and will never give anyone a lift ever again - especailly after this weeks advenutre - I am still delousing my box, the ramp is damaged, and I never even got a thank you or ought !

Yeah, know exactly how you feel. I also seem to have a list of people who just want to borrow my box - have avoided lending it out so far by saying my insurance won't cover it :( I saved a long time before buying it, and look after it really well, so don't see why I should just happily hand it over to someone. Also, a lot of my younger friends don't want to pay to do the trailer licence, so just expect me and OH to drive them around.

i feel your pain, same happened when our horsebox was going although we were more than happy to take horses to the vets as many times as needed, didnt take other horses to shows though, its a 3 horse and we were taking 2 and the other bit was storage, i think we would have been over the weight limit anyway :) its now been off the road for 6 or 7 years and used as a work shop, still runs but the cab has rotted away so i doubt it will ever be back on the road. and i dont know anyone with a trailer or horsebox big enough for my beast so no point in asking and would always pay and if damage was done i would pay for it to be repaired like wise if my box was damaged by someone else! :)

What a selfish attitude! Don't you realise that paying out hard earned money for anything horsey is off course to save a bunch of scroungers having to do the same? Next you'll be saying you object to providing hay & feed to people for free!
Only joking, in all seriousness I don't have a box so either I pay a transport co or if i'm lucky enough to be offered I pay diesel, blitz the entire box & prepare their horse day before if they want, & do favours in return. Hate the freeloading attitude so many horse owners have.

This year I paid quite a bit to have my old Rice trailer serviced/repaired "properly" and it is now knackered so I am transportless. In the last few years I gave lots of people lifts (inc taking time off work to take horses to the vet) and also let people borrow the 4x4 and trailer, no damage ever done and it rarely bothered me, but I guess I was just lucky, in your situation I think I might feel the same as you.

I did promise to take someone to the vet a couple of days after the trailer became unusable so I did have to ask a yard friend to borrow theirs but tbh I am not comfortable asking people to borrow things like that so I probably wouldn't again but that was a genuine need.

My daughter isn't in the mood to put a lot of work into her horse right now anyway so even though I am sad I can't afford to repair/replace it, it's no biggie to me.

If we get takewm anywhere we pay diesel and muck out after.....have my own trailer now anw dad takes us places i get away with taking most people as my mare needs the whole trailer or she falls over...we borrow for our big lad and always leave more diesel in than we used or we will ring up a transporter would never take the mick and it annoys me when people do.

X

I don't move people's horses now. My line is, I have a brand new trailer and also I'm not insured to transport other peoples horses.

I don't give lifts when travelling my horse as he is a bad traveller and if he stops travelling in this trailer then I can't afford to run a lorry.

So my 2 lines just cover most eventualities really.

Good luck in fending them off. xx

I know what you mean!! I have spent the last year paying £90 to a transporter to go to fun rides, dressage etc.,

Just got myself a little box and have lots of people asking for lifts. Granted they are offering fuel but I went and picked a horse up for a lady last weekend. 50 mile round trip, half a day of my weekend, she didn't clean the box out when we got back and she bunged me £15

??!!!!! NO MORE!!!!!

Well said GW!! I won't give people lifts either, my standard line is insurance, you can bet your bottom dollar no one will pay up if their nag trashes your box. Another reason I have the 505 Ifor too - My other excuse if they have a 16hh plus is that it wont fit!!

We have a cheeky livery on the yard who once said to me "I can sell my lorry as you have a trailer and you can take me out" I told her where to go!!

People just take the piddle and think you owe them everything and will drop everything for them. I worked bloddy hard to get a trailer and to keep my towing car on the road so why should others just get the free ride??

I love it when someone asks what it will cost and you tell them, then feel guilty and end up topping the money up yourself...

I've nearly finished rebuilding my rice, spent excess of £300 just re flooring ramps and floor. I've pretty much replaced every part of the metalwork, spent 6 Weeks and God knows how much money and time, I'm going to post photos shortly. my point being, fuel money alone will not compensate for my time, parts or running gear on jeep. I've rebuild it to MY specification, for ME and MY horses. No one elses. If my horse kicks holy **** out of it then I'll re do the work. 9 times out of 10 a "friend" won't pay for damages, will whine about cost even though it barley covers your running costs not to mention your time.

Rant over.

But thats right...............your insurance WONT cover it so they can feck off.

Ive been on a yard with lots of youngsters that think this, and its so stupid and spoilt behaviour. If they didnt earn it, why should they get to use it???

I even feel bad when someone does me a favour and WONT accept payment..........ive had to hide money in my friends bag when she has taken my boy when he has moved yards. I was totally stuck then as I didnt drive or have much ££

know what you mean, i saved up to buy a new ifor willims trailer and decent 4x4 last year to take me and ned out. As soon as i have it others think as a matter of course i will also take them out with me, wait 2 hrs for them etc etc like thier taxi.

You must be way more approachable than me. In the few years I've had LR and trailer, I've only moved one person across town (a friend and I offered) and I've never been asked by fellow liveries or "friends" They probably know what my response would be. I will happily help a friend or someone in real emergency need, but I draw the line at routine stuff for acquaintances.

Mind you there was a suggestion we drop someone home whose lorry broke at a competition. I refused on the point of insurance. No way in heck I'm having an unfamiliar horse sharing my trailer with my pony. I pay for insurance to be covered and have the horses picked up in the event of a break down, I don't see why they should get away with not bothering.

I don't see how people even have the nerve to ask. I probably would if it was a close friend & it was a vet emergency but for anything else its just rude. I've had lifts but only after being offered, not cos I've asked or hinting.

I don't think people asking if you are going anyway is an issue. Especially if they are willing to pay and their horse and yours get on. I think its only cheek if you weren't going anywhere in the first place. Our yard has a trailer you can hire for 30 per day anyway so not usually an issue. But as I say if your going anyway why not? I like sharing if I'm going to a show as its sociable and more fun!

I would ask if it was an actual emergency - get to vet now or die, type scenario. Or if we were really stuck and couldn't get access to a transporter. But I would pay fuel, and whatever a transport company would have charged on top. And yes, I'd muck out/scrub down/repair as needed. I'd also be willing to do them a favour as well as payment in return - maybe muck out for a month, or pay for farrier.

How awful for you! Just say your insurance wont cover it and that you do not have a transporters license. Have the phone number of a livestock transporter to hand so you can give that to those who ask for a lift. You are then being helpful and no can can therefore legitimately complain.

I can relate to that part, I feel bad because I'm not in it for the money, I genuinely wanted to take them out as I know that is a fun thing to do with ones horse and it seemed a nice thing to do if we were going to the same place. I've only ever charged 1 person what it actually "costs" in my view, and even then I am not factoring in my wages when I have had to take time off work.

Can I ask did you do the brakes on your Rice? If so, where did you get the parts from, and was it hard?

Skint, coincidence, that's what I am now!

I had new brake lines made up, got my fingers in A few pies and had a mate of a mate make them.

I'd recommend a trailer manufacturer/fitter do it for you. If you can change car drum brakes you can change trailer brakes.

I only restored it myself as I have dabbled in the motor trade (fitter), can weld and have a friend who's a carpenter.

I wish I'd just taken finance on a new ifor now mind lol.

I'm going to post pics of the whole restoration as soon as I'm finished.

If you can't get hold of cables drop me a pm and I'll see if I can get some made up and sent to you.

We give a friend a lift, but only when we are going to an event if a lesson, I have never asked for payment , but she always pays for our lesson or class.

Luckily not on a yard, so don't have the problem of others asking :)

I have had some of the same, and some people barely give anything to cover diesel costs.I took one womans horse to the vets and picked up the next day,in my own time and had to ask them for the diesel money as none was forthcoming, although these same people can lavish money on themselves.I only give lifts to a select few friends now having learnt my lesson.

IME it is usually other peoples horses that damage peoples trailers rather than their own horses.

As a non transport owner at the mo I am shocked at how many cheeky s*ds there are around. I have been taken to places, but only if I have been invited - I would never presume that someone would give up their time and lorry/trailer to take me somewhere they werent already going to!

OP - tell the scroungers that your insurance doesn't cover you to take their horses. Or maybe that the extra insurance costs/fueld wouldn't be covered by the rates you would have to charge them :p

My dad buy me an old horsebox for my birthday a good few years ago. One if my liveries said the girl that shared her horse wanted a word fine no problem she then said was I insured to drive my wagon and if not she had told her dad that he could come and take her to show during the week when I wasnt using it  with this in mind would I pay for her dad to go on my insurance as a driver and he could move horses on his days off. The cheeky little cow was told no she then called me a tight cow followed by dont know you got a box you dont go anywhere apparently she had told the livereis that this was to be used as their box and it had been bought them to use when they wanted so they were really unhappy when I said it was for my horses and no one elses if they wanted to purchase a trailer/box the parking was free funny they never bought one. Subsequently she got thrown off the yard that day I was livid cheeky little c**

Wow, this thread has shocked me a little bit. :p I used to have a trailer before I had to sell up and I was always quite happy to give people on the yard lifts to shows if I was going, why not? It splits petrol money and I never had a problem with it!? Now I don't have one at the min the same people I gave lifts to, now give me lifts too. :) Just would feel selfish about saying no if I was going and they wouldn't be able to go otherwise. But I guess on my yard we all share lifts etc so I just see it as normal.

Being thought selfish genuinely does not concern me :p

Since I last lent out my trailer and it was 'inexplicably' damaged (partition was put back away where I keep it and turned out to be bent when I come to use it, and the person who borrowed it has no recollection of anything happening to it ) its me that has the hassle of paying to have it mended.

So no, no more. If people want transport they can do what I always used to do. Hire a transporter or trailer. I never asked for lifts anywhere when I didnt have my own transport, I just paid up, and saved up, nothing stopping anyone else doing the same :)
