Just because you own a box you are not a taxi!

Wow, I'm always trying to get people to come with me to rides to share diesel costs and hardly ever get any takers.

I always offer to run people places if their transport's off the road. It gives my truck a run out, and when mine's been poorly I've been offered other people's. I suppose I'm on a really nice yard where people aren't out to take the p.

Wow, this thread has shocked me a little bit. :p I used to have a trailer before I had to sell up and I was always quite happy to give people on the yard lifts to shows if I was going, why not? It splits petrol money and I never had a problem with it!? Now I don't have one at the min the same people I gave lifts to, now give me lifts too. :) Just would feel selfish about saying no if I was going and they wouldn't be able to go otherwise. But I guess on my yard we all share lifts etc so I just see it as normal.

Gosh, some of you poor people need new horsey friends! I can't imagine someone giving me a lift & not saying thank you, mucking out or paying half the diesel.

Both the above....maybe I've just been lucky on yards I've been on  I have often given lifts to friends without transport, and they have always given me enough money to cover more than the diesel, and mucked out my box afterwards. I've got a friend who doesn't have transport at the moment, and I take her out on a fairly regular basis; sometimes I take my horse as well, but if it's something I'm not ready to do yet, I am more than happy to take her & watch her compete.

I've lent out my trailer when I had it, and my lorry - but always to people I know well, who I know would take care of them. I wouldn't lend it to a stranger, but also wouldn't feel the need to be rude about it.

I have no problem with offering a lift to friends and find most people really grateful. However I have come across a couple of people who have been pushy about it and I will avoid giving them lifts.

The first one used invite herself if she found I was going anywhere which just made me determined to find reasons not to take her. Had she backed off and waited to be asked I would probably have offered lifts from time to time.

Another girl on our yard got upset when some of us were going cross country schooling and she had no transport. I already had another horse coming in my trailer but said if I had a space sometime I would let her know. She told me sharing wasn't any good as her horse liked to spread out so she would need the whole trailer. Maybe she thought I could tie my horse on the back! Needless to say she never got a lift from me.

I've had the good and bad of giving lifts but sadly the bad does seem to outnumber the good :(

I didn't always have transport and was always pathetically grateful and as helpful and thankful as possible when I was given a lift to anywhere at all - seems a lot of people have lost the art of gracious gratefulness and don't see why you wouldn't give them a lift.. why should they be grateful, are they not paying you ??

Once I had my own transport, a lorry years ago and now a trailer, I am very wary whom I give a lift to and don't lend my trailer.

When I have broken my rules I have had to bear the results.. one horse attacked my TB on the lorry ("she's never done that before") biting him so badly he had to have stitches.

I broke a long term rule and lent my trailer to someone.. and her horse put a hole in the ramp. TBF, the ramp had a soft patch where the seal had worn (I hadn't realised) but had been previously happily loading 750kg ID with no problems .. ho hum. Really, that is not her fault entirely so I let it go.

My most amusing 'share lifts' moment was when I was buying my trailer and a friend said 'you can't buy a 505 as most other horses (my friends all had great big things) won't fit into it' !!

Er... the trailer is for my horse and he fits nicely thanks

WOW, I must have been very lucky....

When I brought my girl we didn't have any transport, and if it wasn't for people letting me have the spare space in their lorry/trailer, or even one amazing guy who lent me his lorry when he wasnt using it (!!) we wouldn't have been able to go anywhere. We ALWAYS paid for diesel, or if borrowing the lorry filled it up on the way home (always to more than it was when we took it) and mucked out the lorry/trailer afterwards, I can't believe some people don't!!

I have my own trailer now, but I have no qualms offering someone the second spot in the trailer if I think their horse will travel ok with mine. I have also been very lucky and no one I have taken has ever taken the piss about it. Hopefully I can give someone the chance to have as much fun, as I was given by the kind souls who helped me out :)

I think the main point is that there's a world of difference between offering a lift, & in return offering to pay diesel, clean up, do favours etc & the assumption anyone owning transport has a duty to provide for you.

I wouldnt mind giving lifts is people paid diesel and cleaned out the trailer afterwards but they dont they expect to be taken and leave mcuk in the trailer or "oh you can clean it out i need to go pick up my offspring".

I don't move people's horses now. My line is, I have a brand new trailer and also I'm not insured to transport other peoples horses.
Its really sad that people have to give lines, and people simply can't accept that a. you bought your transport with your hard-earned cash and b. a simple no should suffice.

We have a cheeky livery on the yard who once said to me "I can sell my lorry as you have a trailer and you can take me out" I told her where to go!!

That is down and out rude.

Of course. How inconsiderate you are not thinking of the second spare horse you will be taking with you every time you take your horse to a party. Better yet, why not give up your horses space and take 2 friends :p

Absolutely!!

I was hacking to shows and a woman on a different yard invited me along as she was only taking one of her horses. I agreed and offered to hack to her yard, save her coming along back roads to me. She refused and was happy to come pick me up. Horse was ready, my tack and stuff in my OHs car already at show. Horse loaded and off we went.
On way home, I gave her fuel money and unloaded my horse. Felt guilty as they wanted to get home so no time for me to clean out my side of trailer :( I was very grateful for that lift. I also knew my horse was an angel to load and travel. I'd be too embarrassed to accept a lift if I had an eejit horse.

I now have my own trailer, have a jeep I part-share with my dad and still to take my towing test. I'd love to have company but wouldn't feel right as the jeep isn't out and out, so until I get my own jeep, I won't be giving lifts.

Wait till you get told off for having your horse in the "first" slot because so and so travels better in that space, when you go for one class at a show, then to find out that so and so has actually entered 2 other classes and the last one wont be on till gone 10pm !

When you take someone for a 30 min lesson and find out they have booked an hour, and then need to go for a 20 min hack after to cool it off...

Wait till someone tells you "can't you have the day off" when they have asked if you could take so and so for his teeth to be done at the vets - to save them the call out fee !

Wait till you get back to the yard to find out that they have gone home, whilst you are still removing the pile of crap from there side of the box.

Oh and wait till the offer of a fiver diesel money for a run to and from Liverpool in the middle of a bank holiday weekend, and then ask you if you can go and fetch it back again the following weekend - but there's no point them going up with you as its a waste of a day.

And like I say - I have deloused the box twice this week and have a quote for £500 quid to fix the damaged ramp/paint work due to the really good traveller that suddenly wasnt....

So never ever again, to anyone
