So new horse Atty had his first ever set of shoes on 4 weeks ago.

My farrier has just been out to see him and has said he's got good feet and think he can go without hind shoes and I have agreed.

Now thats a lot of change in a short space of time but I'm hoping it works as it will save me a lot of money in the long run.

Fingers crossed.

Absolutely. Having no back shoes may only be a saving of £20 or so, but over the years its a heck of a lot. I keep toying with the idea of having my old girls hinds taken off. She doesnt do a lot of road work, I just darent. She has so many other problems I just dont want to rock the boat.

I'm so tight that none of mine have hind shoes on!

Admitedly they don't do a lot on the roads but they do hack out a bit and are absolutely fine, in fact, I think they slip less.

It certainly saves on the blacksmith's bill!

I'm sure he'll be fine Ali.

I really hope he is fine, just still in that terrorised period of he's all new and working what if I break him !!

Ah well he never had any shoes on in Spain so he should be OK.
Haven't tried hacking him yet but he's fairly sure footed so I think we'll be OK. We never loon about on hacks anyway.

I just have to start work on the we do not need to corner like a motor bike in canter in the school.

Cheeky buggger can't half do a riding school pony impersonation if he wants to.

My lady has been barefoot all round since December - she's an TBxID type, and I'm lucky in that she does have excellent feet. She seems happier without shoes, and we leave the others behind when going down hill on the road!
I just watch carefully to make sure we don't overdo the road work, and am extra careful and let her pick her own way over stones.
And yes - we do stuff! Have started to be placed at prelim dressage, and have started low level SJ, and XC schooling tonight! I've not looked back since taking off those shoes - so well done on a brave move and good luck!

Chico never had hind shoes, I hacked on roads and up and down hills, etc, and he was always sound and had super feet - fingers Xed Atty will be the same (the only thing that may bother him is the wet come winter, lets face it, hard ground is NOT going to be a prob!)
