except he's been gelded....... :o

This morning I was asked to name my price for Piper :o :D

A man, who family is into gypsy horses and trotters, dropped by whilst I was filling the boys water trough and asked if he was sale and to name my price. Said he'd seen him trotting around the field playing with Toby and thought he was a stunning colt and would be an asset to their breeding program............

ah, well, he's kind of gelded, sorry. Oh, and not for sale either.

Guy was very dissapointed :o

I have to agree with him - his trot is stunning and he is geourgous even if I do say so myself. And a temperament to die for.

So, whilst the guy seemed nice and spent a while chatting about his fathers trotters etc, Piper now has his freezebrand clipped out so it's extra obvious and the gate is double paddlocked :o

Ah well compliment in a way! I've had the same out before riding too.

I wouldn't worry too much lol [re, freezemarking and stuff] as they know he's gelded....no use for stallion or breeding value. :)

How old is he out of curiousity? V.Pretty boy!

He is very pretty - too pretty for a boy really :o

He's 3yrs old.

dozzie -I did mention he was terrible in traffic (not true but hey ;) ) He also asked about Toby (who also moves like a dream loose in trot) and I told him be was broken to ride but a total and utter idiot :

I don't think they had any intention of nicking him but better safe than sorry..........

He is gorgeous! Just a word of warning though and dont want to frighten anyone but ... I too have a gorgeous looking coloured gelding with fantastic paces that he really likes to show off in his field. A few weeks ago a new girl at our yard was having problems with her new pony and called the dealer she bought her off. He came to our yard to advise her and whilst he was there I was riding my horse in the field, he offered me cash there and then and tried to pressure me into selling him, I too advised him he was definitely not for sale (particularly to someone like him!!!). Anyway cut a long story short, someone tried to steal my boy from his field last week in broad daylight on a main road!!! I dont know if there is a connection (police looking into it) but I am now so paranoid and having problems sleeping/concentrating at work (hence why I'm on here!). Fortunately my boy does have residual problems leftover from before I got him and very few people except me can catch him!

Just be on your guard at all times!

Dont blame you for not wanting to sell him, I wont ever get rid of my boy even though we still have issues lol

Its a hard 1 because although you dont mean to you straight away think the worst its just natural instinct!!I had some1 questioning me not so long ago about my horses and where I keep them and without even thinking I found myself giving false details of where they were kept!!Its sad to have to tar every1 with the same brush but you just dont know who is trustworthy and genuine! Your saving grace could be you have had him gelded so could not be used for breeding!!

Be VERY careful! Your post did scare me a bit as I was reading it...!!

I had a similar thing happen with my friesian. A guy was walking past the field when i was there and was saying how beautiful she was and if she was ever for sale he'd be really interested etc etc etc. He knew what breed she was as well which concerned me slightly. I saw him go past a couple of times during the afternoon with a pony and cart too. Double locked the field with two very heavy duty chains and padlocks, the type you cant cut through!! Put a couple of signs up saying "these horses are freezemarked.." etc. About a week or so later i went to check my horses in the morning as usual and the mare was out on the road, with her headcollar on which she hadnt been turned out in, and the other one was tied up to the fence. Someone had obviously tried to steal her but presumably she wouldnt load while the other one was not with her, or maybe they were disturbed (police said could have been either, but there had definately been a lorry parked outside the field), they had sawed through the post and rail fence and cut through the sheep wire underneath it to get her out. They had also stolen my locked storage shed thing (with all my rugs and stuff in, no tack though!!) and my electric fence unit and battery.....

Im just SO thankful that, for whatever reason, she refused to load as she usually loads with no issues whatsoever.

I agree, be extra careful. You never know what peoples intentions are. I have known a few people come up to friends and seem very interested in the horse and then asking questions, one friend then came up to find someone had quite obviously tried to get in her field (wasn't sucsesful) but rugs had been taken off horses backs.

Tewkesbury :) Horses are kept just outside Tewkesbury and the field owner has now fitted a security light over the field and some better quality fencing!!.

Scary stories!

i am glad my neighbours are (resident) gypsy folk (been there over 10 years)
Noone would ever steal from them and would probably think my horses are theirs!

Think you were right in taking precautions. I have a coloured colt and have been asked if he is for sale a few times. Alot of coloureds were going missing in our area not so long back. Must be absolutely dreadfull to have your horse stolen and its such a shame there are people in the world that can go round doing this.

it makes me sooo angry that people think they have the god given right to steal somebody else's property,,,
especiallly being an animal that has emotional attachment aswell

we all work hard for our money, and to find that special horse, just for someone to steal it away for free

it is a cruel world!!

Yeahh glad youu did that about his freezemark coz my friend owns a farm and while she was doing her horses this man asked her if she wanted any help and was like "do you have any scrap metal on your farm you don't want?" and they end up robbing your whole farm apparently. madness x

we had a huge bunch of gypsys out back of our livery yard for 2 weeks and they were seen snooping around the perimeter, hiding in groups behind our storage and coming and asking to use our water and if boxes were for sale, was horrible, we all took our tack home n were on high alert for weeks. i hate that complete strangers can make us feel so uncomfortable at the place we're normally happiest. luckily nothing was taken!

Well, he was still there this morning :o After reading the horror stories I'm resisting the urge to phone my mum and ask her to nip down and check he's still there now.........

I'm putting my faith in the freezemark - it's very unusual for them to steal freezemarked horses and they are always found afterwards.

Lovely compliment - and yes, agree with everyone else about making sure you are very vigilant. You just never ever know. Good on you for clipping his freezemarked area, double padlocking the gates etc. Can never be too careful.

Your boy is absolutely stunning, the guy clearly has good taste!

I had this with my coloured mare, I increased her age and pointed out she had COPD and terrible arthritis and said we had tried to put her in foal several times but think she is barren - makes you feel so paranoid. Good job my name isnt pinochio

I've been stopped while out hacking by 2 blokes in a van, they offered me £4k there and then for my horse because he was a perfect match to their cob (apparently) and they wanted a driving pair. I laughed told them my horse is not only too sensitive to drive (not true he drives but I don't) but he's also blind in one eye (true) and not a novice to handle (very true) and they said fine and drove off.

Only an hour later we were on our way home and I happened to look behind to see the 2 blokes on foot following us. They had ditched the van and were obviously seeing where we kept the horses! I had to ride up to a friends farm knowing his dogs would be out in the yard and ask my friend to drive down to see if they were hanging around. They were and a few words and a showing of a gun (from my farmer friend) and a few growls from the yard dogs they scuttled off!!! I was terrifed and luckily had my horse at home at the time so ensured he was bought into the house paddock at night and the dogs were out in the fields in the day. I'm afraid I'm a 'don't trust anyone' person when it comes to horses and what people will do to get them. :(

Omg, all this is very scary, I'm a worrier at the best of times!
The field we were at until recently had the nosiest neighbours in the world, they were very annoying but on the bright side they would have always noticed anyone unusual around and that was a comfort.

But now were are in a field without a house nearby so really anyone could wonder around and no one would see, especially with 2 cobs its a worry. Gates are double chained but really if someone really wants to get in they'll find a way.

Very worrying :(
My cob has just been moved to our field now for the autumn and winter luckily there are alot of houses around as the fields in the middle of the villiage :)

Very worried now too - seriously considering having mine freezemarked now after reading this (even though he's microchipped), something I would never have considered before!
Luckily I'm on quite a big yard and the field can't really be seen from the road - All the same I'm just glad mine can be a sod to load!

I don't understand why ANY horse owner doesnt have their horse freezemarked. Thats only my opinion, but I don't care how ugly they look, there is PROOF that it makes your horse less interesting to steal, AND if they ARE stolen they're extremely easily recoverable.

They also (if you pay the subscription) ring the ports, vets, slaugherhouses, etc etc etc etc the minute they're taken, so that everyone KNOWS they've gone.

Well one of mine isnt at the moment, although the freezemark is booked (its a "personalised" one) and paid for.

My reason is because unfortunately she would be disqualified from any further gradings if she is freezemarked. Being a friesian they are not allowed white marks and unfortunately the dutch judges see freezemarks as a mismark. Its ridiculous and stupid and i kicked up a fuss about it when i was told (to be completely ignored lol) but i guess its not as common in Holland. They have disqualified horses from the gradings in the past because of it.
