Just finished clipping my dark bay mare and now the coat thats left is really greasy. How do I get her coat clean and not dusty. Also how do I get her face clean as I have only half clipped her face. Any tips on how to get it clean.

Cheers

What sort of clip has she had StellaA? If you've taken a lot of hair off, I'd deal with the greasy coat thing by getting a bucket of hot water with just a squirt of shampoo in. Ring an old hand towel/tea towel out in the hot water and wad it up into a pad. Then sweep it all over your horse's body, stopping plenty of times to re-squeeze it in the water. It gives a surface body clean and will remove loose hair and dust. You don't want to wash all the grease out because your mare will need it to keep her coat waterproof. That grease will have been there all the time lol but hidden by the longer coat! To get her face clean, a good brush first to get any mud off then you can use the same warm water and a sponge to wash her face. If you use Johnsons No More Tears Baby Shampoo in the first place then it won't hurt if she fidgets and gets any in her eye. If you've got an old towel, rub her face briskly after you've washed and rinsed it. Give it time to dry, brush again and then get cracking with the clippers. Why did you only do half? Was she being a prune?

i'm guessing u mean u clipped half her face as in down the line of the cheek piece. wat i do with my dark bay after clipping is get some warm water with a tiny drop of fairy/shampoo in (not so its soapy just so its brakes down the remaining clipper oil) then a towel and put it in the water ring out as much as possible then wipe her all over (she loves it hahaha, like a spa treatment hehe). you can also do the same without the fairy/shampoo to just clean them up a bit. like those hot towels u get on aeroplanes hahaha
hope it helps

Washing soda crystals!!!

Get a box of soda crystals from Tesco (other supermarkets are available apparently). Chuck a small handfull in a bucket then top up with hot, hot water. (As hot as you can bear).

Use this whilst still hot to wipe over the clipped bts. Wring the cloth out as much as you can, you want it so its damp not actually wet. The crystals break down grease and lift any remeining dust and dirt off the coat.

Once the coat is dry polish with a dry cloth to pick up any further dust thats risen up.

I always use baby oil in water after clipping and a rag - it picks up all the hair and leaves the coat in nice condition (use a rag as the hair doesn't come off and you need to chuck it afterwards!).

I have also used almond oil and soya oil when I couldn't find any baby oil, so they work just as well if you don't want to use a mineral oil.

After clipping I always go over them with a cloth dipped in warm water mixed with a cap full of dettol. Lifts grease and loose hairs plus it smells lovely and clean
