How big are your horses compared to their rug sizes.

For Instance Indiana is a 17hh TB but only in a 6ft6 rug so is quite compact.

Rolo was 15.1hh Cob and was in a 6ft6 and was quite long for a cob to be honest.

Poppit is a 15.3hh IDxTB and is only in a 6ft rug bless her so again quite short backed.

Was just wondering how big your horses were?

I actually have a preference for shortbacked horses (My own opinon) anyone else have any preferences?

I thought Axel was very short backed but maybe he isn't, he's in a 6ft 3 rug and he's 16 hands.

!!! I have a 16hh wb mare and the 6'3 is too long for her! But she's very shourt coupled - my preference.

It's important to buy horses to fit the rugs you already have, I reckon.
Long backs are weaker, but short backs cause short choppy stride, and sometimes O/R or forging so middling is good.

16.2 and 6'9" she is very compact but has a big shoulder which takes up a lot of that!

Irish draught x clydesdale 17h has 7ft or 7ft 3 depending on make. 15.2 heavyweight cob 6ft 9 or even 7ft which fits better due to large neck and shoulders.

Last year Amber was 15.2, in foal (so round) and had 6ft rugs,

She is now 16.2 ish and some of her rugs look a little short, so might have to get a couple of 6'3 rugs.

Or is that just a really good excuse to buy more rugs?

Depends on the make of the rug!

B is a 6ft 6ins and is 16.1hh - but in a Weatherbeeta, she is a 6ft 3ins

Berry is in a 6ft 3ins Weatherbeeta atm and tbh it's a little roomy over his back end, so I gues would be 6ft 3ins in other makes - he's 15hh

H is in a 6ft Weatherbeeta atm, but will up grade to a 6ft 3in for the winter - he's 15.2hh at the wither and 16.1hh behind, but then he is only 18 months old

Topper (my old chap) was 17.1hh and he was in 7ft rugs, but he was long!

15.3hh cob mare, longish back for a cob, wears 6'6 rugs sometimes 6'9 in some rugs.

17hh BSH at work wears 6'6, tbh I would put him in 6'9 just to make him a bit more snug but its not me buying the rugs.

my 15.1 arab x sec D in is a 6ft- he's really compact, and my 15.3 TB is also in 6ft... she's very narow at the shoulder, but has a good lengh back... i think its great so they can share rugs!

Fudge is a 14.3hh Welsh D (cob type) and wears either a 6 foot or a 6 foot 3 rug.
Lady is 13.2hh and wears a 5 foot 3 rug.
