Hattikins new chap popped his 5 bar gate (1.20m+), fully rugged from a trot last night for no apparent reason except that maybe he thought he was missing out as something else was being brought in at the time and he appears to be a very sociable person. He wasn't stressed or hurt at all but a little surprised by his arrival in the next field as were we. At least we know he can jump and just hope he isn't a serial gate jumper!

Just curious to know whether many of your have done the same?

My 14.2hh cob used to do it with his rug on. Normally if he thought he was missing out on something!!

May settle down as he gets into a routine?!

Sol jumps in and out of two paddocks for fun or when shes been cantering round and can't be bothered to stop

Funny thing is its electric fencing and in the summer when its sunny it look like she's jumping over nothing until you see the 5ft fence

Last summer my cob was so excited to go out with his friends that while we were walking to the field he bolted and jumped a barbed wire fence, leaving me some what...astounded!! Hasn't done it again since, was obviously too much work to do again :S

Yes! Someone else!!! Mine's rising 5 and regularly pops the 5 bar gate from an ambled trot! I was quite shocked the first time. He only did it for the first month of being at the new yard and he stays put now (touches wood!) but it can be a bit worrying.

Mine did that but from a walk, whilst I was standing at one end of the gate

I'd never would have believed it had I not seen it myself. He just ambled up to the gate without a care in the world and just popped over it

My eventer that I have now sold used to jump 5 bar gates and post and rail fencing every now and again when he felt he was fed up in the paddock he was in. He did it a couple of times with 2 turnout rugs and a neck cover on!!! Occasionally he'd jump over a hedge in to another paddock too - after that I wasn't too worried about pushing him to school over fairly large fences at home!!!

My showjumper used to jump out of his field, into the yard, run through, jump into the paddock with the showjumps and jump them! I think he was trying to tell me something

Just out of interest is he part connemara? (or the other posters who have said their horses jump out). Its just that a friend has an overheight Conny and a Conny X both of whome are monsters for jumping out. Her place now looks like Colditz the fences are so high! Also my Conn X just give you a pitying look if you put up an electric fence. She just walks over to it and pings it

. Just curious really

No not a Connie, not sure but pretty certain that he's a Knabstrupper (Danish warmblood). Apparently they used to get used in the Circus as they're very trainable so maybe he's just making a point, he's certainly proving to be pretty smart in a very amenable way.

My little TB used to get beaten up in the field so was only ever turned out with one other nice horse. He would always jump out and then get the C@*p beaten out of him. Stupid horse

I have had the joy of having two jumpers the first one a connie x tb who jumped out of her field over 5 ft gate a few times.

Current pony NF has jumped from standstill out of his stable twice in the 6 months I have had him. Once he was fully rugged. I think once they realise they can do it then if they feel like it they will esp if they have a strong personality!

It is a constant worry but at least I know if the stables ever caught on fire he'd be able to escape!

Mine jumps into the other fields sometimes in the summer when the ponies are on a diet and she's not - loneliness I suppose.

Plus she often used to jump out of her field if I took any one of the other 3 ponies out. She would still be left with 2 for company but she didn't even like one leaving the fold.

She hasn't done it for nearly 2 years now so fingers crossed she's growing out of it !!

My yearling has done this twice now, once over a 5ft barbed wire fence away from all his friends and again for no reason over a really big fence into an adjacent field, he hasnt hurt himself yet, touch wood.
His mum also took herself XC last summer!
She was in at home as the field had just been sprayed, she picked the bolt on the door cleared the paddock fences jumped two or three more onto the riverbank and up and over the road to my father In laws farm where i keep her in the winter, she skittled in the gateway and around the back to the big field. All this without a mark on her, no-body saw her do it but she must have jumped some spectacular fences as our home yard is really secure, so we thought! how she didnt cause and accident we'll never know.
