Maybe this is a silly question or one that has been asked before but when competing which do people prefer and why? Going 1st in the class or going last? I am referring to jumping classes. Just wondering which and why, thanks in advance 😊

depends on the show.

If its on grass and weather is bad i try and get in early so ground isn't too bad

if its a normal show i like going later and seeing if any fences or distances are causing people trouble

Depends how many horses I'm on. If I'm on several, I prefer spreading them out nicely. If I'm on one, I prefer going last to see where everyone is making their mistakes in order to avoid them. But it also depends on the weather. As said if the ground is bad, or if the weather is hot or supposed to turn bad, I prefer going earlier.

I usually prefer early in the class as you can be kept waiting for ages if people keep turning up for the class and my nerves tend to get to me the longer I wait.

That said, my big guy is very nervous in the warmup so I tend to wait for it to quieten down before I get on him. If it doesn't, then we just have to man up and go whenever.

If I'm doing two classes I go towards the end of the first class and then early in the second class. That way I can give my horse a break before the jump-off of the second class.

Thanks all for your replies. The reason I ask is that the start list for a show I've been building up to for quite a while now went up and I'm 1st to jump, so am trying to tell myself that this is a good thing lol!

it can be a good thing if you're nervous. It's often easier going in without having seen anyone jump, as you don't get any prejudices against bogey fencies etc or watch anyone fall off!

Agree with this!

I don't do much, and only low key, but I like to walk the course, warm up and get going soon as possible.

Whatever you do, remember to have fun and enjoy it (and, as I have to remind myself - keep breathing!) :)

Thanks I am generally quite nervous so I know I'll be EXTRA nervous about this show, if that's even possible! So will try to enjoy it and just ride on :)
