Just dont know whats wrong! :(

If scientific studies can prove horses dont think like that.. then ill eat my hat.

Surely evolution proves that? As someone else pointed out, a horse in the wild that dropped to the ground or refused to bear weight on one leg wouldn't last 5 minutes. It's like if a horse rips its leg in two, it won't react like a person and freak out at the sight of blood - if it doesn't feel pain there's no problem, so it won't be put off galloping off if needs be. There are certain things horses brains just haven't evolved to do, and I would say faking it is one of them. Laziness, yes, but not faking sudden severe lameness

Should probably add that pain doesn't necessarily mean a horrific injury, sometimes I get a random leg pain that makes me hop around and then vanishes, I'm sure horses are the same :)

I am not scientist but i truly have no explanation for 2 events my pony has undertaken, maybe i am brainless, but unless someone else has any other theories i am stumped, the vet, saddler, back person etc could find no fault.. if it was that severe, hidden or undetected.. surely he would not be completely sound within a space of 5 minutes?

So which leads leads me to believe the crazy theory i came too (maybe i need locking up and put in a straigh jacket).

I agree with you completly, our horses couldn't sound more similar lol! :)

well id love to know what was wrong with mine then, cant be hopping lame one minute, then the next absolutely fine.. whats your theory on it then if im so wrong?
.
Which is why you get a good equine vet to do a full lameness work up. If he's displaying these sorts of symptoms then something is wrong somewhere, and he deserves to be diagnosed properly, OP.

Completely agree with above very strongly. I've been watching this thread in amazment tbh. I think I've heard it all & then I realise from threads like this I haven't poor horse.

Oh & yes it can be a serious issue, my own dressage horse would go hopping lame to completely sound within 30 mins. Sometimes within 5mins he would be sound again.
He was sent to Leahurst on MRI we found he had seriously damaged his Impar ligament.

I'm still trying to get my head around 'ruptured bone'. The leg-dragging could be subluxated patella, and that sort of pops itself back into place, but the falling over?

*wanders off to think about it*

my horse hurt her back, she was really sore lifting her back legs up and had no obvious lameness. Vet came out and tested her back and she reared up and was really shaky, he completely wrote her off, told us it was proberly kissing spine and that it would not be easily fixed and left it like that! He is meant to be the best equine vet around, but completely wrote her off there and then.

We got a chiropractor out and it turns out my mare had a completely rotated pelvis, that was why it hurt to lift her back legs up and there was no obvious lameness! 6 treatments and she was perfectly fine and has been ever since, it might be worth contacting a chiropractor tomorrow but i think i would also contact your vet just in case anything has broken/fractured or any serious ligament/muscle damage!

Would keep him in until he's been seen too, wouldn't want him hurting himself anymore, i hope he makes a full recovery whatever is wrong with him!

i have been following this thread for a while and read most of the posts and just had to put my experiences across.

A few years ago I knew a horse that jumped grandprix courses then started struggling and over the course of a year ended up competing over 1.10/1.15 classes. After having endless vets and back people check him no one could find anything wrong not even really a lameness. Then an equine chiropractor that was highly recommended came in to the area and was asked to have a look at him, he asked the owner to back him up 2 steps then walk him forward 2 steps, which is the first thing he gets everyone to do with here horses then refused to touch the horse and said they needed a vet not a chiro as the horse had a fractured pelvis. After explaining a number of vets had looked at the horse with no luck, they got the vet out again to have a look at his pelvis which wasnt ever checked as they said a horse could not have a problem with its pelvis and still be sound, low and be hold it had a fractured pelvis and thankfully found before it completely broke the horses life was saved although never the same again.

Secondly I actually had a horse that for no known reason would go lame and when I say lame you would think she broke her leg. There was no rhyme or reason for the lameness it would happen the day after a show, going out for a light hack or even the day after a rest day. It only ever lasted less than 24 hours then she would be perfectly sound again so even when we got the vet out there was nothing to see, so as advised by the vet I would carry on with her work and competitions, this went on for about 3 years happening maybe once every 3 to 4 months. Then I had her at a big international show for 3 days and on the 2nd day she pulled out the stable hoping aging! I thought why do you have to do this to me know you cow :)!!! So thinking SHE WAS JUST PUTTING IT ON the vet told me to trot her up passed him and he would give her a smack to try and bring her out of the fake lameness as he put it. As he smacked her on her shoulder when she went passed him she collapsed on the floor to hour horror, so immediately got sent to the clinic and guess what she was sound by the time she got there! They nerve blocked, x-rayed, scanned and did all they could think of then decided to do a radiation heat scan type thing on her, which found a very slight hot spot on her shoulder they then x-rayed it and she had a hole the size of a golf ball straight through her Humerus. The vets said it was probably an abscess that had happened years ago due to possibly knocking it on a stone when rolling in the field that had eaten away at the bone to the point that there was only about 3mm of bone holding the shoulder together and it could of snapped at any time when I was jumping her.

So I guess what I am trying to say is im hoping there is nothing wrong with your horses but as I have experienced, even when you think they are only PUTTING IT ON I would now agree that they DON’T there is always a reason for a lameness even if it’s not obvious to most people!!

Best wishes to you and your horse!

Thanks everyone for the comment the vet did come over two weeks ago when i started this thread, i have also had a chiropractor up and everyone has said he is fine just stiff prob has arthritus so he is on the best supplements, but he is a very clever horse and i know he puts it on, like i said we jumped around Firle on saturday no lameness went clear and he has never done XC before so i was very happy :)

Horses don't fake lameness...............
...........and I have a headache from banging my head against the wall!!!

To the last two comments.... whatever get a life he had the vet two weeks ago and hasn't been lame since.... Your opinion is actually irrelevant to me now, i know my horse he does fake it sometimes i dont care anymore you dont know him or me, so please keep banging your head if you care that much, but it wont make me change my opinion as i am enititled to one like you are! so please give up i will not just change because a stranger thinks i'm wrong!!!!!

But you were prepared to ask a group of strangers at the beginning of this post, so what is the difference.
I really really hope you are just on a wind up because it makes me sad to read things like this.

Poor horse to have an owner like you who doesn't take him seriously when he is in pain.

Horses dont 'fake' injury, they arent humans you know.......... I think you just want to make yourself feel better, in that case get a toy horse then you can pretend it fakes injuury all you want at least you wont be hurting a real animal.

People apply human concepts to horses, I would LOVE to see a peper written by a vet after investigtion/research that shows that horses can fake injury

Please dont judge me, he honestly is quite a strange horse and i dont really take any of his acts seriously as he does put it on. That was just an example like i said the next morning he was fine and jumped out the paddock after still doing it the next day! lol, this new problem that this whole thread has been about, was ok since last Monday as he has been sound ever since! I cant believe how long its gone on for :)

A horse that has a broken back will try to rise to its feet. A horse with a broken leg will try to jump out of a field if it feels threatened or worried at being left on its own. Do you think in these scenarios the horse is putting on their ailments?

Horses are unable to think like us humans. To put on lameness so a horse can get out of doing something, now come on. Are you really as stupid as you sound????
He may be a strange horse but he is not a human with human traits and thoughts. Get out of your mind set.

Ok everyone your right im in the wrong!!! Lets just leave it at that!!! and i am the worst horse owner in the world!! You are all so right!!! Take care everyone!!! lol
