Just for fun - did you buy what you wanted?

This is the best description! "I didn't buy what I was looking for, but I got what I needed" - so true! I got a baby when I was looking for something more established, too, and actually I now have exactly what I was looking for at the start, just built it myself (with a lot of help along the way!)
Thank you.
I’ve seen the photos you’ve posted and he’s matured into a beauty!
We’ve good instincts you and I 😃

Yes… and it didn’t work out. I was looking for a second horse and kept saying my dream would be a slightly more blood, young, spit image of my current gelding with as much history known as possible. Well that dream horse found me, and I couldn’t believe it. We nicknamed him the “goodest boy” as he was a Labrador in all ways.

Unfortunately after less than a year together and various investigations he was destined for a lighter lifestyle than I intended him to have. But how he found his next home was also interesting… they went to view a horse at my friends next door. The horse wasn’t for them and they mentioned all they wanted was a loveable Labrador-type to hack around. Friend said she knew of the perfect horse. Cue a quick call to me and they came to see him immediately. Came back to try and showed them his passport and they welled up. Their previous horse, who was adored, had the same bloodlines. When they rode a rainbow came out, which they went on to say happened when their previous horse had been PTS.

I maintain that horse was meant to go on that journey to them… however heart breaking it was for me!

I wanted a calm, quiet, established horse, preferably a gelding, no taller than 16.2, just something to enjoy, after years of various worries and handling mare-y seasons.

I got a beautiful 15.2 cob mare, 8 years old (now 9) but fairly green for her age. Apart from being a mare (turns out I really am a mare person lol) She is pretty much what i wanted, maybe not as confident and experienced, but definitely very sweet, with a bit of sass, and easy to do most of the time. She was the first horse I viewed after losing my ID mare, I just saw her ad, asked my friends if we could see her, went next day, friends did all the work, I just sat on her at the end, and that was it, I bought her. IN previous buying, I have been very cautious, took ages to decide, viewed multiple horses, had a few vetted- but this time I just kind of knew it would be ok and went for it. I hadn't sat on a horse in over 5 years, didnt' think I ever would again, and I've taken it very slow (for me mostly as lost my confidence completely as a rider) happily though my more experienced friend rode her a lot over the last year and helped further her experience and education. I am very lucky to have my horse indeed.

wanted: a second mini shetland, to drive. I ended up with a 17'1 chestnut oldenbugh mare (best horse ever) doesn't drive haha
😅

Did I get what I thought I wanted? Not quite. I wanted an established Arabian mare for my first horse, who could teach me the ropes. But I was chosen by a two year old colt. He’s seven now. I never regretted buying him. He’s the best.

Off the back of another thread about buying a particular coloured horse - how close was the horse you ended up buying to the shopping list you set out with?

I wanted a reasonably established 6-8yo ISH/warmblood type, around 16-16.2hh, dark bay or chestnut (no coloureds or greys!), that would do a bit of low-level eventing. Sane and sensible, bold into a fence (after previous horse was a serious stopper). I'd been to view a nice 8yo full ID that was just a bit behind my leg and a few 5yo's that were just too green as I wanted to crack on.

I ended up with a 15.2hh, 12yo, coloured (!!) unknown breeding with probably some cob chucked in there at some point, came off the hunt field 6 months beforehand and prone to serious bouts of hooliganism. I will say he ticks the box of being seriously bold into a fence though (actually terrifyingly so) 🤣 Ironically I didn't want a 'youngster' as didn't want to invest 3 years before being able to get out and do much.... here I am 3 years into re-schooling this one. 😂

Wouldn't swap him for the world mind you 🥰
I wanted a nice NF /Connie type around 14.2 to 15hh ....ended up with a 4 year old OTT throughbred that arrived skinny and wearing one shoe after being chucked out in a field...he actually turned into a really really nice hacking horse and we had many years of fun before he was pts at the age of 23 with colic :-(

I was looking for a sensible horse, as it was going to be my first, who would be a nice safe ride on which to do a bit of hacking and maybe some dressage, no older than 15. Should be no bigger than 16.2hh, so I could feel confident handling it. Maybe a cob-type, something that wouldn’t be out of place in a riding school. I secretly wanted a lovely bay with four white socks.

I bought an 18 year old ISH with fluff for brains who thinks that the world is out to get him. Oh, and he’s about 17.1hh. He’s not the safe, sensible first horse I should have bought. I absolutely adore him though, and he’s made me so much of a better rider, for all the challenges I’ve had with him. He is also bay with four white socks, and an absolute gent on the ground, which makes up for his more interesting moments under saddle.

I nearly ticked all the boxes, I think I was quite strict when I was looking.....I wanted an Irish gelding, max 16.3hh, allrounder, 5-9 yo, no greys, got a basic education and hacking experience / hacks alone. And after a previous horse I wanted something short coupled with good hind limb conformation and definitely no warmbloods 🤣.

I bought a bright ginger Irish 5yo advertised at 16.2......18 months later very definitely 17hh plus 🙈😱 no recorded breeding, im maintaining sporty Irish draught. Uphill, short backed, moves for fun. But definitely more sensitive than I anticipated, hacking alone is a challenge to be worked on and he's teaching me to ride all over again becuase I've never ridden anything quite so awesome. One day he might get the chance to take his 40+ yo fat, scared jockey over some fences that are more than 60cm. 🤣🤣🙈

Yes. I wanted the exact replica of my old jumping horse who I loved more than anything else in the world at the time (I had my son 9 months and one week after he was put to sleep). Same colour, breed (Belgian) with four white stockings and a blaze and same height (17.2) picture 1

The one that came along was owned by a friend of mine was delivered from
Heaven and was exactly what I wanted a carbon copy. My mum had suddenly died two weeks earlier so we always said he was sent by her.. picture 2
