Ok so over the last couple of weekends I have done a couple of In-Hand classes with my youngster ( which went very well) Dispite me doing ridden showing workes etc for years I have spent ages on here getting tips and our turn out right to make sure we look as professional as possible, although I still managed to blunder due to nerves and a giddy yearling on our first attempt and faced the wrong way for the individual inspection ! Doh - on the video my OH took you can actually hear someone say "well turn it round then you stupid cow" (nice) Now I don't want you lot to be making statements like that but I am interested in your general observations and pet hates in the show ring be it tack, turn out, behaviour or even judging at local level all the way through to the top levels as imagine the pro's see a lot of things us hobby horses do wrong at big shows.

Standing in the line up gives you lots of time to observe and dissect other folk ( People watching, we all do it :p ) Some of these people just don't realise they are doing something wrong and I have noticed that no one tells them either so they carry on in blissful ignorance - these pet hates could actually help people(& me) to achieve better results

I'll start us off ........

Jodphurs in the inhand ring - I know this is petty but it is actually starting to grind on me a little that so many people wear jods and long boots in the inhand ring. You are unlikely to be riding your 2 year old so you don't need to wear them.

Hoof black on white feet especially on greys

I saw someone yesterday go in an inhand ring with pale blue brushing boots on

This goes for both ridden and inhand, people getting right up the horses in front bum, circle away.

I had a lovely one a few years ago the girl behind was right up behind the horse I was riding, and then when cantering as a ride she used mine to pull up with.

Even if I circled away she followed me. Bloodily rude.

Then doing the second trot her horse bit mine, to which mine kicked him in chest.

The thing was I asked her to stop and the judge shouted to her to circle away.

Then when doing her show her horse took off with her and won't stop.

Get some breaks next time.

The people who have the reason they never won the class planned before its even started,
"the grass was wet"
" The person who won itknew the judge"

All the usual crap you hear at local shows.

Parents bellowing at their children from the side of the ring. If you're that bluddy brilliant, get out there and do it yourself!

Fat ponies, that get placed
And I don't mean just a little bit chubby, I mean cresty with cellulite!
Ok its a M&M, but its not supposed to be so fat your endangering its health, and oh look, the judge LIKES the fat unhealthy pony
Personally I think if your pony is overweight where you can't feel ribs at all, if its cresty, and has cellulite. You should not be allowed to place that horse.
its a mssive bug bear of mine :o

OH hundreds of them, one of my favourites was a "professional producer" who push infront of me in the initial line up so he would't be last in line in a class of 35, how pathetic!

Pushy parents and fat hippo horses already mentioned also high on the list.

Damnation - you will be pleased to hear that a mother and her very nice, well turned out but slightly chubby lead rein pony got placed 4th yesterday in best condition - yet the judge did actually tell her whan she aggressivly asked for comments that " you can tell its done just a little too well on the grass this summer my dear"

... She stormed out of the class, calling loudly to the spectators " he obviously knows NOTHING about condition" - fantastic example to set her daughter

I was also pleased to see some positive anti fatty comments in this weeks H&H mag

Don’t care what anyone else is wearing or what anyone else does with their horse providing it doesn’t effect the one I’m showing to be fair.

So the only ‘pet hates’ I’d have is someone coming up too close behind you or in the line up, if I was handling a horse that is a fidget bum or is likey to disturb the line up then I’d politely as if I can stand at the end of the line or I’d just park them up slightly back so the quarters are not swinging around anyone else.

From a judging point of view, people that present there horse practically on the judge! so the judge then has to move out of the way or back so he or she can observe the horse etc, also when running them up and down the handler is that busy watching their own horse they nearly mow the judge over.

The kid on the pony that's been to hoys, Olympia, rihs, everything you name it , yet they only ever compete at local riding club shows so daughter can win. With mother bellowing in the background at how amazing her daughter is.

Incorrect turnout- both horse & rider, if you're going to do the class at least have the decency to research the class and turn yourselves out as best you can.

Larger people wearing ill- fitting jackets, I've seen larger ladies wearing jackets fastened with only one button!!

This^ . . . we've got one of these at our yards and she does my head in. Her daughter is a very sweet little thing and leases the most adorable (and elderly) pony on the planet (a beautiful (inside and out) strawberry roan Sec A) . . . Mum is constantly berating, criticizing and generally kvetching AT both daughter and pony . . . at shows and on the yard. So wish she would just let her daughter and the lovely pony have fun.

Apparently she used to ride and compete . . . so tempted to chuck Kal's reins at her and see how she does (but that would just be mean, now wouldn't it?).

I have to say the Judge sounded fantastic! Unfortunately however I think they are few and far between. What is it with people these days that just don't understand that fat doesn't mean topline/condition!
I went to a show last year, it was a county show, helping a friend of mine. She was showing her Welsh Sec C. Gelding in the in hand M&M. She was placed LAST, and I have to say her pony was the leanest, fittest looking little pony there. The rest of them, were like houses. The winner of the class had cellulite, the fat wobbiled when it ran, and its crest was enourmous. Ok its a highland but it doesn't mean it can't be in good condition i.e fit and trim looking  It really peeved my friend off, and I have to say I was stood by a woman who thought the same as me, that overweight Highland should NOT have been placed

"He's a stallion" To excuse bad behaviour.
I compete two stallions and often have to do the jog (like an eventing trot-up) and vet check in front of mares. If these guys who do live cover can control themselves, how come your horse whose never actually covered or only done AI can't?!

Judge wise, women who judge ridden hunter classes wearing big hats, loud jackets and horrors of horrors skirts. One you know that they would be too terrified to ride and two they would be far happier judging a children's prettiest pony class.

My pony was once placed last in a county show - the winner actually wobbled when being trotted up  and the judge recommended I put at least 50kg on weight on my pony

I don't have many pet hates when out and about apart from people getting too close. My big mare will boot anyone too close and the ribbon is in her tail for a reason! The classic kids whipping their over bitted ponies round is also a big irritation  and so are bad losers, especially when they blame their poor horses

Snotty kids who shout "I hate this pony, I want another one" because they didnt win. In their pea sized brains its the Pony's fault - yet in reality, No horse would have been able to work out what command she was asking for. The pony was so honest as well. I just want to take the ponies home.

Spoilt Brats.

On a turnout note, not wearing hairnets (or even having hair tied back) REALLY annoys me and I've seen it LOADS this season. Trainers I can forgive but only if running a welsh cob.

Generally, people that buzz you in the ring, although I have the satisfaction of mine not giving a d^mn. However did have someone buzz me once and their horse kicked out at mine as they went past. Was NOT impressed at that, fortunately the judge saw and they were down the line.

Most of the ponies being shown. A childs riding pony is a trust worthy pony which a child can ride, hack, lead, have fun with. Not the spindly legged flighty too-small-headed-with -big-eyes monstrosity that gets rosettes.

I don't know what buzzing even is !!!

Ditto the hairnet comment..... also no gloves, I can almost forgive them being black but non at all !!!!

What about coloured saddle cloths ??

Folk that are rude and just horrible like the lady on our video - that is the only vid of my horses 1st show I have got and she's ruined it !!! If you have got nothing nice to say say nothing at all - why do we not get more positive encouragement at shows

I also detest people that win everything all the time lol :)

The black jacket/white jodhpurs brigade :o (these people almost always feel the need to show their horse in a gag too :o )

M+M judges who can't identify the native breeds (just because my New Forest pony is branded with the letter B it does not mean she is a Welsh sec B  )

As long as my /our (lead rein pony and daughter) turnout out to the best of our ability i tend not to get bother about others, I just hope that the judge sees it too.

I have only done about 6 lead rein pony classes this summer, I have been placed below 2 different ponies at 2 different shows who have reared their riders off in the line up but the judge or official hasn't seen

Lose hair grinds my gears big time  a 2 pack of hairnets costs a quid!!!

Bad manners in general (both equine and human!!)

When judging at local shows I have no issue if someone doesn't have the right gear when they are having a go for fun HOWEVER there is no excuse IMO for looking untidy. People who don't tuck their shirts in or tie their hair back or even brush their horse really rile me!

Also, competitiors who ask for advice when it is clear that they neither want it or intend to act on it. I am more than happy to help/offer advice to people who genuinely want it but someone who is fishing for excuses for not winning can jog on.

Earlier in the year I witnessed a mother yelling at her daughter in the ring to "just whip it"! Poor little pony was as good as gold but all you heard was a whip cracking. Wasn't necessary at all

Also people getting far too close behind, the ribbon in her tail is there for a reason!

I was once in an M&M first ridden class and it started raining. All the other ponies started fidgeting and all the parents rushed in with rugs to put over their bums. THEY ARE MOUNTAIN AND MOORLAND!!they should be able to put up with a biit of rain. I was 4th and the pony did a great little show and stood really well for the judge. 1st and 2nd place were children of another judge who came in to put the rugs on and then chatted to the judge! was NOT impressed.

Also really tight short jackets it is just obscene when there is a canary coloured a*se bulging out.

Or in working hunters when a horse and have 4 faults demolishing a fence and beat a horse that just rolled a pole. I know what I'd rather be hunting...

And quater marks on hunters, where did that fashion start from?? save it for the show hacks!!

Handlers wearing trainers in the ring! Especially white ones!

Oh dear I do this one! They are brown though but if I didn't I think I might fall flat on my face! Running isn't really my thing!

I hate plaited ponies going into M & M classes at local level and the judge not saying anything.

Also as someone else said judges who don't know their natives. I have New Forests and Dartmoors and have been told at local level that they don't have quite the action for a welsh! One is a chestnut with flaxen mane and I normally get asked if she is Welsh c or halflinger! I'd much rather they asked the breed than judged you as something you're not :)

I don't really have any major pet hates but I can't understand why the there is the fashion for such ENORMOUS rosettes on browbands, if you look close enough, there is actually a pretty pony underneath the bridle, also ditto the ribbons in the children. Actually I have thought of a few:

Rude riders who sit on my horses arse.
Shows in a huge field, but rings so small that a couple of ponies would struggle to go at a decent pace, let alone half a dozen hunters.
Horrible adults who shout at their offspring because they didn't win. Horrible brats who jab poor pony in mouth and boot it in the ribs in temper 'cos they didn't win

Buzzing is when people overtake you really close (often in the hope it will upset your horse) instead of circling away.

Plaited ponies in an M&M - I can cope with that if it says 'To Include Part-Bred', but not if it's only pure M&Ms.

From a judging point of view, people that present there horse practically on the judge! so the judge then has to move out of the way or back so he or she can observe the horse etc, also when running them up and down the handler is that busy watching their own horse they nearly mow the judge over.

On the individual trot up you are supposed to aim at the judge so he/she can see the action from the front (head on) - the judge is supposed to step out of the way and then back in line again so they can see the animal move from directly behind.

I hate badly behaved animals being placed up the line in hand! I went to a championship show the other day and a welsh D stallion was behaving appaulingly. It would not trot up at all, reared, bucked and lashed out with front and hind hooves. How on earth can a judge assess it's movement?

Friends of judges - if you know what I mean.

Welsh A ponies who are very obviously over well over 12hh being placed!

People who cheat in home produced classes!
