Just for fun - what's your dream breed?

Loving the variety of horses we all like (and pleasantly surprised how many of us are still suckers for a pretty face)
To be very clear, my dream is the fact that there is a stable with my very own horse in it which fills my heart with joy every day.
I'd just like more 🤣

I've been really lucky to have experienced a lot of different breeds and I love a lot of breeds, I appreciate the brain and spark of a sharp cob, the elastic suppleness and engine of Warmbloods. I'm not a fan of appaloosas I just don't vibe with them, so much so it's often the case that I find out a horse I just can't gel with turns out to be an Appaloosa part bred.
And while there are many breeds of be happy to welcome into a stable I've never quite grown out of my little pony mad girlhood love of Arabs and Andalusians. Even in my teens and twenties when everyone was falling for friesians and later the spider legged warm bloods Iberians and Arabs were like a dirty little secret 🤣
I certainly can't afford two but I do occasionally find myself window shopping PRE fusions and hispano Arabs 🙈🫣
So what's your dream breed?
I’m like you, PRE’s and Arabs were always the dream, or a really cracking, compact chunky little TB (with a star and a snip if I was going to be fussy!). I grew up reading ‘The Black’ books so had him in mind as a child, a beautiful black arab or PRE was always on my list.

I have lived the dream a bit, with my beautiful bonkers black PRE (with a dash of Welsh B). And now I have my high % palomino arab who has the prettiest face and expression I have ever seen (when the ears are forwards!). So I’m doing pretty well on the tick list! Plus I got my star and snip, they just happen to live on the face of a Shetland instead of a TB 😄

I’ve had two SJ bred warmbloods one with Selle Francais in his breeding. Both have been super horses that have turned their hooves to most things. I also barely jump but am attracted to their physical type.

My loan horse was Selle Francais / tb and she was fabulous . She was everyone’s favourite hunter as she would keep you safe. I only got her as her owner didn’t feel it was fair to keep hunting at 18 but she wasn’t ready to retire completely

Appaloosas are quite an acquired taste. They do not suffer fools gladly but if you click with one they will go through lava for you 🥰🥰
They have a very specific way of moving in my experience which I just don't enjoy, and, I've no objection to a horse having an opinion, but like a$$holes we all have one but we don't have to share it with everyone all the time whether it's relevant, interesting or appropriate or not🤷‍♀️🤣
I don't really dislike any horses, but I wouldn't thank anyone for an Appaloosa or a Cleveland Bay based on my experiences with a few of each breed

What don't you like about their movement?

Caveat that when I say appaloosa I'm saying my spotty thing who sounds like one (15hh, spotty but realistically is just a Heinz 57 who used to have some dots on 🤣) but long striding and smooth. Straight moving rather than flashy but with a weirdly uphill canter.... And yes lots of loud opinions. Which you will be told whether you asked for them or not 🤣🤣
My mum rode a 16hh leopard appaloosa that she said was 'choppy' to ride and felt like a little pony though

Well, bear in mind spotty is not always appaloosa - I'm very much not averse to spots. Although Bon has decided he'd prefer to be grey 😬
They are super comfortable, but it's like their rhythm is ever so slightly off. I can't quite put it in words but where I love a sharp crisp rhythm theirs is just a bit fuzzy round the edges.
And I'd say that in general they tend to feel a bit short striding and choppy

Akhal teke, extraordinary horses but I'd not have a clue what to do with one supposing I found one for sale. On a more realistic level I'd love a Hackney, either a larger pony 13.2hh or a small horse. Preferably a less showy one without the exaggerated knee action, they are so underrated as great all rounders as well as driving animals.

I need a SPOTTY MULE

well not necessarily spotted... but anything leopard complex
I had one for training years ago. Semi-feral, and always retained a wildness to him. Oh, and a complete disregard for fencing other than high stone walls. Thankfully the owner realised that a ridden career wasn’t the best option for him. He became very handleable but was allowed just to be a companion. He came with a false donkey society passport with hand-drawn spots so we were never sure of his history.

As a young horseless child, the closest I got to horses was owning a copy of the Observers Book Of Horses and the Akhal Teke with its greyhound physique and metallic gold (albeit a black and white photo) colour stood out to me as a Wow, What A Horse To Own!

There were also childhood phases of wanting a black pony (after reading both Black Beauty and also Patricia Leitch's A Pony Of Our Own) and a short-lived phase of wanting a palomino (because a local boy let me sit on his palomino pony and a girl I knew had a palomino pony. Short-lived as everyone wanted a palomino so I wanted something different.

I never hankered after a crossbred coloured cob cross gelding but that was my first horse when I was 32, and the two that have joined him sinc are also both been coloured cob cross geldings.

Knowing what I know now, the coloured cob cross gelding is most definitely a far more suitable horse for me than an Akhal Teke would have been.

Ooh just thought of another breed I’ve always admired. The Rocky Mountain horses. Love an Icelandic too very smart.
There's a RMH x PRE filly foal I've mooned over for sale and a stunning RMH x arab at stud as well. I wonder if they would be a nice combination of laid back/gaited and a bit of spice. I always end up looking at partbred Arabs. I would love a black hispano arab one day.

I would also like a chunky strawberry roan ala Flambards probable a full up new forest although I have also discovered strawberry roan connemaras!

I have also always enjoyed the QH and paints I have ridden over the years of the trail variety. I am fascinates by criollos but have never met one.

I think I am a suckered for a funky colour and a pretty face with a fairly chunky body 😅 which does describe my current pony with maybe a couple of extra inches, I've also discovered chestnut fells exist and they are also beautiful!

I WISH I knew what my spotty thing was

(She is also grey!)

But reasonably she is the best horse I could have ended up with because she's so kind and I just wanted a horse that was a friend- and she is certainly that
I'm pretty sure there is/was an "English spotted pony" that was an actual breed at one point - obviously I'm very aware of knabstrupppers, I'd expect there are other breeds which accept spots as colour too, its just that people see spots and automatically think appaloosa.

British spotted ponies! Super little things

I do know her pba x foals were both registered BSPS but she has no recorded breeding of any sort and went through sales as a yearling then to a dealer then to who I bought her from, and no one at this point knew she was spotty -it was only worked out when spotty babies popped out!

My cousin has a British spotted pony and he has always been a complete menace! He has a great sense of humour but seems to use me as his victim! He’s not a very spotted chap though.

He’s called Squeege 😂

@FieldOrnaments Malopolska/malopolski come in spots too. Often wrongly called Knabs.
This girls a stunner!
There were often quite a few appaloosa x new forests at one point I wonder if that would fit your girl?

I bought my sporty, bright bay with a white face, SJing bred warmblood 2 years ago so dream 1 done.

Dream 2 will likely never happen, but a 'prefered colour' Rocky Mountain horse would be amazing in my field.

I'm greedy so would have to have at least 2!

An Anglo Arab, around 15.2hh and ideally Chestnut for endurance and cantering around the countryside - we actually viewed one last year and was so close to buying him but at the 2nd viewing he strangely deposited me and my teen daughter, for which I was so confused and devastated as really thought he was "the one." He's since sold and I suspect I may indeed see him on the endurance circuit. He is one for the "one that got way" thread.

Another 14.2hh sporty coloured cob (like our coblet) just as an all rounder, 60cm jumping, fun-ride, family pony, with an "in your pocket" personality as every day I wish coblet was sound enough to ride. He was cheeky, fun, exuberant and just lovely.

Teen daughter would like a 16hh ID, ideally grey!

This. The Appaloosa breed in a nutshell 🥰

I do get quite a few funny looks when I say I have Appaloosas - most people look at me and say "Oh they're far too opinionated and aren't exactly forgiving" - but that is what I love about them - if an Appaloosa doesn't agree with a way to do something, you can be sure as hell they'll tell you about it 🤣

But equally I've found them to be the most loyal, loving and genuine horse breed out there....

Rabbit (who is my rising 3 year old Appaloosa) is 1001% my horse - no doubts about it. I've known him since he was a 8 month old colt and when I went to view him, his breeder said that he was destined to be mine. We just had this instant connection which has just gotten stronger and stronger x He is hands down the most intelligent and sweetest horse I've ever had the privilege to know, he demands the best out of me when we're training, but in return he gives me his heart and his all. He doesn't appreciate when he or I make a mistake - he reminds me of a perfectionist in some ways.

The other day I started the basis of teaching him to lunge and he was getting a bit confused, so I took a few steps back to where he was comfortable and then built up from there. But what was interesting was that he seemed to be annoyed that he wasn't picking it up quickly, he was really focused but couldn't coordinate himself and he did a squeal or two. I then asked him what was up and if he was peeved it was too difficult a thing to try, and I swear he stopped, looked at me, tilted his head to one side, let out a massive sigh and then looked at his legs and then back at me as if to say "how do you work these bloody things!" 🤣 Then when I explained to him (at this point I'm in the school having a full blown English conversation with him!) what I was after and showed him (I swear my yard owner thinks I do some barmy things 😆), he followed me and was looking so pleased with himself when it clicked x

I am a total Appaloosa convert ❤️

But if we are talking money is no problem and we can create our own dream horse - weirdly enough I would absolutely LOVE an old fashioned Thoroughbred, the ones that are still sleek looking but have a bit more bone to them x I love their speed, how their brains work and in general how elegant they look when moving. However, I don't have the nerve to ride a TB and I'd be constantly freaking that I was ruining them in some way, so I will stick to my Appaloosas who just roll their eyes if I do something daft 🫣 x

My spotty thing, app or not, definitely does the eye roll at me 🤣🤣🤣

Norwegian Fjord for me. Owned one for a short time many years ago, unfortunately he'd gone sour in a riding school and I made the decision to sell him as a driving pony, but I'd love to have another one day.
