i have 2 mares in foal due now to 2 weeks there hoofs are cracking off big time well one is the other has just got a couple of cracks dont know if to give a feed balancer for overall condition like blue chip or top spec or a hoof supplement, any help would be great as its my first foals.

Well the thing about the balancer is that it is going to provide your mare with everything she needs nutritionally whilst pregnant - so whilst not specifically for the feet I would imagine it would help.

Certainly I wouldn't feed anything else at this stage as the levels in other balancers may not be suitable for an in-foal mare.

The balancer is also low cal. Which for something like your mare may be just the ticket!

can echo the baileys stud balancer - Bloss is on it and shes looks fab (i know shes only 50days gone, but still!) I however put effol on her hooves twice a week at night to keep them from cracking and this works well as it soaks in nicely over night whilst she is stabled.

I wouldnt go adding extra feed tho at this late stage, perhaps just put something on the hooves, but nothing in the feed.

Another vote for Baileys Stud Balancer. Baileys are very helpful if you need advice, the balancer is also good as you don't have to shovel loads of food into very pregnant mares when they can't fit it all in! My Welsh x Appaloosa mare is a good doer and didn't need any more condition, and as an 18 year old maiden easily foaled a cracking filly. I own a feed/tack/equestrian etc store, and looked into all the major brands before I settled on Baileys, when the filly weans the mare will go onto the Baileys lo Cal balancer for the foreseeable future!
