Just found a stray dog

As title really. Parking my car up my NTR terrace in Bridgwater and a staffy cross (maybe), black and tan with white toes on his front feet and white on his chest, a full tail and all his bits intact came running up.

As I know he does not live on my terrace and was heading off towards the main road I caught him and took him to the vets for a scan. No tag on his collar and they could not find a chip, but vet rang the Dog Warden out of hours service and he is being collected and taken to Whitehouse Kennels in Lympsham.

He was so very sweet and friendly I hope he is not another 'surplus to requirements' dog.

Might be worth having a look on Dog Lost to see if there is anything missing in the area. Hope they find his owners and he is not another dumped dog statistic.

Have tried to ring my sister in law as her son has a staffy but no reply will try again later. They live in Bridgwater but it is a big place.

Well, I hope his owners turn up or they manage to rehome him as don't they only give them 7 days and that's it?

We found two (what we thought) were stray dogs a couple of years ago (on xmas eve) we thought they'd been dumped as they had no collars and looked v lost. We rang the police (no reports of lost dogs), we asked around but noone recognised them as we hadn't either (you know most of you local dogs don't you). It was nearly 5pm on xmas even and as a last resort we rang Dogs Trust to (a) ask for advice and (b) see if by any chance they had had any calls about lost dogs. As we rang they happened to have just got off the phone to a guy who had called them about two dogs that matched their description.

To cut a long story short they were from the next village so we drove them back to their home. Turned out the owners son had come in drunk about 3am and not shut the door. The dogs usually wore collars until they were shut in for the night so they had got out without them being on. They'd been wandering in the snow since 3am until we picked them up about 3pm. They were VERY cold and VERY wet. So glad they weren't dumped as we thought though.

I really hope the situation is similar for the dog you found. The owners of the dogs we found had actually contacted the police as soon as they realised the dogs were missing. However, when we found the dogs and rung the police to see if they'd been reported they had no records of them!! Hmm, that worked then!

Thanks all of you for your help. Have put his details on Doglost in the Found section but he is not on there in the Missing posts.

He looked very well cared for and extremely friendly, the vet thought his nails had been very recently clipped, so am hoping that being an entire he scrambled out of his garden for a night on the tiles! Well, I soon put a stop to that ....

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I do believe it varies around the regions. As far as I'm aware, in the South West that does not happen, particularly if they are friendly. I tied him up to a gatepost whilst asking a lady at the top of the terrace if she recognised him as she walks in the local park a lot with her dogs, and her lurcher got out and belted over to say hello. This chap was overjoyed and wagged his tail so much he almost fell over. So it would appear he is people and dog friendly. Didn't get a chance to try him with a cat

Im pretty sure around here he will have 7 days holding and then go up for rehoming, a friendly chap like that wouldnt be pts

I really hope so - I hope I am very wrong about the dog warden's place! With any luck he is just lost and someone is looking for him. Does make you realise the impotance of chipping though if that's the case.

Nope, but his details have now come up on Doglost - I have put him on as a Staff x .

Keep thinking of how well socialised/cared for he was and hope that somebody is desparately looking for him. Will ring the Dog Warden on Monday morning to see if he has been claimed.

Unfortunately, the 7 day rule DOES apply in the south and a dog being ultra friendly is not a guarantee that he will stay safe. He will do his "time" in the pound, then they normally try to circulate details to see if he will be picked up by a rescue. If a rescue cannot find a place and no one comes forward to claim him then yes he will be put down. I see a lot of posts where people are desperately trying to find nice dogs rescue posts as their pound time is nearly up. He is a staffy or staffy cross which means there will be little demand. Sorry to sound so brutal but this is what I see and I am a big staffie fan.

Agreed, Many Tears tries to collect 7 dayers from the pound, all of them are friendly etc but there is limited space in rescue and no-one wants a staffie anymore ...

You could try http://www.dogsfriends.co.uk they are on the Mendips and even take in dogs from Welsh pounds. If a dog is near to being pts they will take it and most of their dogs will go into foster care.

Luci07: I had no idea that happened in South West. I am not surprised, supply is heavily outstripping demand.

Kitsune: I look at MT website almost daily and agree that they only take a couple of staffs at a time.

Dobiegirl: Many thanks for the suggestion, I used to foster for them last year when my little dog was stolen. Anyway no need to worry now, see my update .... RESULT !!!
