Dont know where the rest of it is, and pretty sure it was not there yesterday, thinking a crow must have dropped it

I would say Badger(just to be awkward)!! I think foxes teeth are a lot finer. Hard to tell as that is one big canine(realise the gum is receded due to not much left) and yes I agree first I thought dog. But then colour of fur does seem more badger and they do have quite a longish snout.

So badger.

We have a fox skull at the yard- it's teeth are much finer so I vote not a fox. Looks like ginger tufts of hair though- how big is it and where did you find it?- could it be a large wild cat- know they are out there- have seen them!

could be dog someones pet being dug up by something

looking at the back molar its def not badger wrong shape but is is the same shape as a fox and similar to a dogs

That is a fox skull. I have one at work identical. They do look like they should be a dog but it is 100% a fox skull.

We also have a badger skull that has a completely different shape, very unique and much smaller than you'd think.

Fox 100%

Oh I hope it is not a dog :( it's teeth are very White and don't look old, may check my little digs grave that 4 months ago, although I am guessing her skull would not be as clean as this one.

Have brought it home, as I thought it was interesting

no dont worry, not a dog skull.

Will be lovely if you clean it all up.

We have two fox skulls at work, an adult and a cub skull, they are fascinating.

Dog Jaw too heavy for Fox Muzzle too long for Badger wrong shape head and muzzle for Big Pussy Cat.

no way is it a dog, look at the size comparison to the shotgun cartridge in the second photo - it is only small. It's eye sockets are also too large and far forward for a dog of that size, occiput is also too pronounced for a dog skull, very typical feature of a red fox skull (Vulpes vulpes)

Hmm, I wouldn't be so convinced - there's a great deal of variation between skull shapes of different breeds of dog. My first thought was whippet type, but I wouldn't put money on it until it's fully cleaned up with photos from all angles.

Had a much closer look at it, and I think it is a fox, it has a black muzzle with red coloured hair ( although almost gone) showing on the rest if the muzzle.

Now , how do I clean it up, don't really want to handle it more than I have to :)

yes of course there is alot of variation in different dogs breeds, but the variation of this one says it's a fox! :P

Compare photos of a greyhound skull here - http://www.skullsite.co.uk/Grhnd/grhnd.htm

and a red fox skull here - http://www.skullsite.co.uk/Redfox/redfox_lat.htm

and then to OP photos

And pay particular attention to the teeth. Dog has front teeth, then canine, then 3 lower large teeth. Fox has front teeth, canine then small single tooth, then three large teeth. The presence of the single bottom tooth in the photos the OP posted show it is a fox skull.

Hope that helps :)

A thought has just struck me, is it only horsey women who are not gross about finding decomposion animal heads on walks/hacks, that we actually take them back home to examine later and discuss on a forum :o

no wonder my ex thought all horsey women were nutty :D

Thank you paint me proud, I will do that and hope the same crow that must have dropped it does not take it back :)

I have loved reading all your replies.

I have never found anything like this before, so now to find some where to display it when it is clean ....

And ideas ? :)

I should take photos of all the ones i have at work, they are fascinating and i'm sure you'd all love a look. The cat one is especially lovely.

We have a few complete skeletons too, a rabbit,a rat,a frog (my favourite) and a pigeon. We want to get a fish skeleton but they are very expensive so still on our wish list.

Oooh cool!

I love stuff like this, in the museum at uni there's a whole gorilla skeleton that's awesome :D
And a load of stuffed ones and skulls. I love the polar bear skull and the crocodile and the monkeys :p
And there's a person skeleton but she freaks me out a bit :p

But as zoologists we think nothing of having lectures in there, and we have an exam about identifying some of the skulls too so we have to pay attention!
