I had no choice really as she was sooooo hairy and getting so sweaty every time I rode her and didn't think it was fair on her any more.

anyone else have to clip all year round?

also do you get marked down in showing for having a fully clipped out horse?

My horse is clipped year round no problems, you should be fine re showing, just leave it 2 or 3 weeks after clipping.

My friend fully clips all year round and shows. As long as she is fullly clipped you shouldn't have a problem. In winter depending, on the level of the show, the judges will frown on something with anything else but a full clip.

Our traddy cob is clipped all year round as he sweats so much. He is clipped down to just above his knees and hocks and then I grade the hair with horse shavers so that his coat blends into his feather. For showing at local level it has'nt been commented on and it looks a lot more natural after 2 to 3 weeks anyway. The only disdvantage is that he feels every fly so wears a fly rug in the field on most days but this also stops his white patches (he's piebald) catching the sun.

I clip my cob all year round - if you are showing, just do it 10 days before your intended show to let the coat settle again. And as someone mentioned above keep a fly rug on as they do get sunburn and are extra sensitive to fly bites when the hair is removed.

I keep thinking about doing frank... but undecided. Every year his coat gets a bit thicker (17 now!) I am tempted to blanket clip and get the best of both worlds and be done with it as we dont really show a lot/ever anyway!
